"Cisgender is a slur" has some real "people pointing out racist behavior are the real racists" energy to it.

hankg,

@evacide We never even saw a fraction of this level of freakout when gay people referred to non-gay people as "straight people" or the term "heteronormativity". I wonder why the pearl clutching orders of magnitude greater over this very bland term.

at some point I should really write a blog post about my experience with burnout and the factors that led to it (undiagnosed ADHD being a big one, but not the only one), and how I began the recovery process, because I'm certain it would be helpful to a few people. it's very emotionally draining to write about though, and when I think about the things I want to say I end up in analysis paralysis because the story inevitably involves other people who I want to be respectful of.

hankg,

@gsuberland Until one has had burn out, previously called nervous breakdowns, I don't think they understand the depths of what it means. An exploration of the experience and how to dig out of it over time could be very helpful. A common means of respecting people is to revert to a fictionalized story based on the real events. It's more than just a name swap, which may not be sufficient to mask identities. Another alternative is to ask if they mind being included in it and then revert to the fictionalized version if necessary.

I got a real life loupe to use when trying to read some of the SUPER TINY print on integrated circuit packages, but after a quick test, I think it's too powerful. Or maybe the focus point is fixed in a bad spot for what I wanted to do because the chip has to be flat on the table with the loupe flat on the table over top of it to work.

So I'll probably have to get a less powerful one or maybe a basic magnifying glass or something like that.

But in the meantime I can see the pixels on my iPhone!

Extreme closeup of the Iconfactory logo with visible lines between columns of pixels.

hankg,

@bigzaphod That reminds me of a printer's loupe which is optimized to be used exactly as you stated.

The mass layoffs and downscaling of Tesla charging network team and plans is even more bizarre as more details come out. It was their one actual differentiator. They are in the position to be essentially the gas station company of EVs. These changes undermine all of that and contrary to Musk's tweets thy aren't reversing course on it at all. Again though, what will happen to their contractual obligations to the US government that just gave them yet another boat load of money to build out more stations? Are they going to take the money and run with it like they did to California way back in the day? #tesla #ElonMusk

@crumbler Reading the coverage my one dominant thought was, "Thank god I switched to Duck Duck Go years ago." Granted since the heavy lift there is Bing and MS seems to be wanting to go all in on this whole thing too we may soon see the same crap there. Fingers crossed no though.

@lolgop Amen to this! (The whole article really though): “You don’t even need to pretend these two men are comparable in any way. Biden is a standard 20th-century American public servant imbued with all the imperfections that come with that. Trump is the worst president in American history. A demagogue with dictatorial aspirations. A fraud whose greatest accomplishment was avoiding any indictments for his first 76 years.”

hankg,

@professorhank I totally get it and have considered moving out of Florida back to the northeast because of how toxic the politics and government policies have become down here. But I do worry that it basically cedes huge states to Republicans as they get redder and redder thus further locking in their over-representation in the Electoral College, Senate, and US House (the latter less so).

A river monster that can reach 120lbs and eat anything nearby is tightening its chokehold on America's waterways and has now crossed the Canadian border.

Conservationists are sounding the alarm about their unstoppable march across the country from their original habitat in the Gulf of Mexico basin.

'They are going to be one of the apex predators around every system once they establish those populations,' said biologist Joel Fleming. 'If they can fit it in their mouth, they're going to eat it.'

hankg,

@GreenFire What animal are we talking about? Pythons?

hankg,

@GreenFire I mean we eat catfish. I wonder why we can't intentionally eat these to extinction in these waterways like we've done with other species unintentionally.

Being efficient can increase profit, but it also means not being resilient, adaptable, and forgiving. Businesses that are efficient tend also to overwork their employees because the demands on the business are always to be resilient, adaptable, and forgiving. The only entity that demands efficiency is the investor.

hankg,

@mralancooper Some of the supply chain disruption we saw post-COVID was because of sole focus on efficiency at the expense of everything else, including resiliency. Many articles and business leaders said they were looking at how to learn that lesson to offer some more balance there to prevent that sort of disruption again. There has been some signs but mostly it seems to be back to the sole focus on efficiency again. It's like the person that has a heart attack so decides to stop smoking, eat right, and start exercising but then a week later is just back to the old status quo they've known for decades.
