I found a curlew’s egg. Under a tree and predated by a crow I guess. Shame as they’re increasingly rare. I love their mournful fluting of downward notes, so evocative of summer moors.

Ya beauty! Three clear overhead flash+BOOOOM thundercracks and counting.
And the rain is most definitely on.

Not to mention, I was just back from walking 🐕‍🦺when it all started. Fortunate timing.

Gotta love a decent thunderstom. ⛈️⛈️⛈️

@xylophilist It’s suddenly growing darker in west Perthshire.

felicitymartin,

@xylophilist We’re now hearing distant rumbles of thunder. And the rain’s begun.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@xylophilist I hope it’s less destructive than the one on Saturday night, which knocked out broadband across our whole village for 24 hours.

Anyone fancy making a "Matabele Cake"?
This piece of paper found in our copy of "Hilda's 'Where is it' of recipes", a book on Cape cooking from the 19th century.
I'm sure it's possible to substitute sheep tail fat with something else. Having difficulty reading it all, I must admit, partly the old writing and partly the age of the piece of paper.
Can anyone decipher it?
Fun fact: I was at school with descendants of Hilda's.

Bit I wonder who wrote out this recipe.

@withaveeay I'm sure suet would do instead of sheep tail fat!

@alex_roddie Some lovely photos. You make me ashamed that I didn't get out in more snow this winter.

Dog roses have begun blooming in our hedgerows. I think of them as a June flower here in Perthshire

Bluebells are terrific this year and blooming colourfully in places where they don’t normally put on a show. Also all trees that blossom are doing well, perhaps helped by the lack of frosts.

After setting up app tracking protection on my phone a couple of days ago, I can see thousands of blocked tracking attempts across so many apps, including ones that aren't in use.

I don't use Facebook or Google, but they seem to insert themselves into everything to get their sticky mitts on #data.

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@cdavies What are you using to block them?

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@cdavies Thank you. I use DuckDuckGo for search in Safari, but maybe need to use their browser for a higher degree of blocking.

Red deer stag eating fresh bramble leaves in the hedgerow. Seen from the window of my campervan when on the Isle of Arran. It was in Lochranza, where red deer are everywhere - in gardens, on the golf course, around the village hall and doctor’s surgery!

Question for the new-diseases community:

Is the increasing number of ticks related to the decreasing number of birds, itself related to climate change?
What are we to do about the ticks??

felicitymartin,
@felicitymartin@mastodon.scot avatar

@waiting4indy I reckon it’s related to the increasing numbers of deer, many more than forty years ago, AND climate change allowing them to be active for more of the year. At a bit more effort is now being made to bring down deer numbers.

We are living through the war which will define the rest of our lives. It is right now, we choose between freedom or darkness.

And while our Ukrainian heroes are fighting in the trenches, this is what the aid to Ukraine looks like: The US is not even contributing half as much as the European allies.

Is the statue of liberty still standing proud, raising her torch as a symbol of freedom? Or has America become so MAGA, that the torch has been replaced with a white flag?

Wake up America!

felicitymartin,

@randahl And how much is the US spending to support genocide in Gaza?
