Looking at what direction Mastodon is going now I'm 9 months in & a believer in the #Fediverse and there are other options out there for me to #selfhost on.
A couple things caught my eye.
#Mastodon's roadmap includes users being notified when relationships are severed due to domain block and #QuotePosts.
I joined Mastodon 6 months ago today. I started out on another instance but soon decided I wanted my own little instance, just for me, because I wanted to commit to it here. So, @jimcarroll
A few things I've learned along the way.
I like it here. I have no intention of leaving.
I like the oldtimers here. It feels like the late 80s / early 90s at times
I like all the new people here. It feels like 2023 and gives me hope
I followed a bunch of random people to start. That filled out my timeline
The timeline is pretty rich and diverse - it teaches me that randomness of insight is a powerful thing
I keep following most people who follow me - some are irresistible follows, and others fit into my 'random is good' insight discovery
I don't follow you if you followed me but don't have a bio/profile! BIO, people - fill it out!
I modified my #selfhost server so I could do 1500 characters! That seems to be a good balance
I think I have learned more about LGBTQ here than I ever knew, and I have deep respect for the community
I only go back to the other site for weather info and airplane geeks
11 . There's also a thriving AI community/news info that I need to get there
I won't shut down my name there because I don't want someone else to take it
I don't post there
I try to engage here as much as possible. Engagement is key.
I try to practice kindness. I remind myself of my "Social Media Serenity Prayer" before I post
The last few days I've been contemplating just how "chicken and egg" my digital #DisasterRecovery plan is.
I #SelfHost#Bitwarden for passwords. It's backed up to #S3 - but the credentials for getting access to those backups are stored in... you guessed it, Bitwarden.
Additionally my TOTP codes are in Aegis. If my house burns down and I lose the phone I can just restore them from google. Except my Google account is in Bitwarden - and that's protected with TOTP.
Just after I told somebody how I use the two 2TB HDD of my server individually (instead of RAID) to get 4TB of storage, one of them was remounted readonly.
Looks like #Nextcloud Social might be getting a big update soon. Nextcloud Social was my intro to the #fediverse many years ago before the Social project went stale. It's not #Mastodon on the software side, but an #ActivityPub implementation that is trying to achieve a similar goal. That means you should theoretically be able to interact with #Mastodon soon using your current #Nextcloud instance as a server.
@benklaasen I imagine it is more to do with the renewed interest in #fediverse in general, especially among the #selfhost crowd, where #Nextcloud is also popular. They also do a lot of EU government business and EU governments have been having more #fediverse presence as well lately.
If you use #Jellyfin media server, you need to upgrade immediately or shut your server down.
From Jellyfin, " It is absolutely critical that Jellyfin administrators upgrade to this new version if you are on the 10.8.z release train, and likely a very good idea to finally upgrade to 10.8.z if you are running an older major release."
We were discussing some onboarding topics for #cloudron yesterday and were then wondering: What was the biggest hurdle to overcome when starting to #selfhost for you?
Keep your current handle, but look into #SelfHosting any #Fediverse instance. Keep your current #Mastodon and add on a unique experience that you control completely.
Hell, even #Pixelfed if you're really into pictures. F Instagram.
