Looking at what direction Mastodon is going now I'm 9 months in & a believer in the #Fediverse and there are other options out there for me to #selfhost on.

A couple things caught my eye.

#Mastodon's roadmap includes users being notified when relationships are severed due to domain block and #QuotePosts.

I joined Mastodon 6 months ago today. I started out on another instance but soon decided I wanted my own little instance, just for me, because I wanted to commit to it here. So, @jimcarroll

A few things I've learned along the way.

  1. I like it here. I have no intention of leaving.

  2. I like the oldtimers here. It feels like the late 80s / early 90s at times

  3. I like all the new people here. It feels like 2023 and gives me hope

  4. I followed a bunch of random people to start. That filled out my timeline

  5. The timeline is pretty rich and diverse - it teaches me that randomness of insight is a powerful thing

  6. I keep following most people who follow me - some are irresistible follows, and others fit into my 'random is good' insight discovery

  7. I don't follow you if you followed me but don't have a bio/profile! BIO, people - fill it out!

  8. I modified my #selfhost server so I could do 1500 characters! That seems to be a good balance

  9. I think I have learned more about LGBTQ here than I ever knew, and I have deep respect for the community

  10. I only go back to the other site for weather info and airplane geeks

11 . There's also a thriving AI community/news info that I need to get there

  1. I won't shut down my name there because I don't want someone else to take it

  2. I don't post there

  3. I try to engage here as much as possible. Engagement is key.

  4. I try to practice kindness. I remind myself of my "Social Media Serenity Prayer" before I post

  1. I try not to post business content here, but I do have an odd day job. When I do post it, I label it as such. No one seems to mind.

  2. I've been posting my Daily Inspiration here every morning since I started here 6 months ago - but have been writing it since August 2016.

  3. I'm happy with the engagement and comments i get on it.

  4. Server stuff: I don't really think about it.

  5. Every once in a while if I remember I ssh into root to poke around and see if all is good.

  6. All is good. It takes little maintenance

  7. I have a great little maintenance script I run if I remember to, every few weeks, that cleans things up. If you and want it DM me

  8. My server costs $12 US a month. That's about $15CAD. It's well worth it and better than getting a blue check elsewhere.

  9. When I do a Mastodon upgrade, I have to remember to go back into the code to change back to the increased character count I allow myself.

  10. My Substack story in my profile as to how I created my instance gets a LOT of traffic.

  11. No one has ever taken me up on my Vultr referral code about my instance in the Substack story LOL https://www.vultr.com/?ref=7207859

  12. I can spend an hour or two on my timeline and never find anything appalling, hateful, or awful. The level of spam for me so far seems low.

  13. That hour or two is time well spent - I've learned many new things, and for me, learning is my essence for being

I now have an offsite #Yubikey for my password manager accounts.

Feeling all smug about that for some reason 😂

More reasons to #SelfHost Gitlab - your data in the cloud is being used to train LLMs. Also, “Google” and “privacy” don’t belong in the same sentence. https://www.techtarget.com/searchitoperations/news/366536417/Citing-data-privacy-GitLab-syncs-with-Google-generative-AI

The last few days I've been contemplating just how "chicken and egg" my digital #DisasterRecovery plan is.

I #SelfHost #Bitwarden for passwords. It's backed up to #S3 - but the credentials for getting access to those backups are stored in... you guessed it, Bitwarden.

Additionally my TOTP codes are in Aegis. If my house burns down and I lose the phone I can just restore them from google. Except my Google account is in Bitwarden - and that's protected with TOTP.

Just after I told somebody how I use the two 2TB HDD of my server individually (instead of RAID) to get 4TB of storage, one of them was remounted readonly.

Does this look like a broken hard drive to you?

I haven't dared to reboot it yet.

Looks like #Nextcloud Social might be getting a big update soon. Nextcloud Social was my intro to the #fediverse many years ago before the Social project went stale. It's not #Mastodon on the software side, but an #ActivityPub implementation that is trying to achieve a similar goal. That means you should theoretically be able to interact with #Mastodon soon using your current #Nextcloud instance as a server.

vwbusguy,
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online avatar

@benklaasen I imagine it is more to do with the renewed interest in #fediverse in general, especially among the #selfhost crowd, where #Nextcloud is also popular. They also do a lot of EU government business and EU governments have been having more #fediverse presence as well lately.

I didn't read @bitwarden 's privacy policy and tos when I started to use their services. Honestly, it was a great Mistake !

Really important security fix out there for Jellyfin users: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin/releases/tag/v10.8.10

If you use #Jellyfin media server, you need to upgrade immediately or shut your server down.

From Jellyfin, " It is absolutely critical that Jellyfin administrators upgrade to this new version if you are on the 10.8.z release train, and likely a very good idea to finally upgrade to 10.8.z if you are running an older major release."

We were discussing some onboarding topics for #cloudron yesterday and were then wondering: What was the biggest hurdle to overcome when starting to #selfhost for you?

SrRochardBunson, to fediverse

Want a hot #Feditip ?

Keep your current handle, but look into #SelfHosting any #Fediverse instance. Keep your current #Mastodon and add on a unique experience that you control completely.

Hell, even #Pixelfed if you're really into pictures. F Instagram.

Check out #SpaceHost if you are less tech savvy. I'm trying to figure out how to #SelfHost a #Calckey instance on a #Rock5 8gb #SBC #ArtFed

#TheResistanceWillBeFederated

Hopefully mine will be mobile and off-grid.

I'm adding a #Gemini capsule and possibly #SolarProtocol too.

Folks asked for a How To detailing how I created my own #selfhosted #Mastodon server.

Ask and you shall receive. 😊
I hope it is useful to those who might need it.
Happy to take any suggestions or corrections.

Been a while since my last #Introduction so here it is 🙂

I'm a #PHP #SoftwareDeveloper working for the UK government. I collect and abandon hobbies but at the moment, when I'm not walking my #Corgi #SheridanTheCorgi or working on my #SelfHost #Homelab you might find me #MiniaturePainting, or playing #Boardgames / #TabletopGames, or #VideoGames on my #Steamdeck and #PC

I also do a bit of #Bouldering mostly indoors but sometimes outside. In the past I've flown #RacingDrones.
