If any new followers who are participating in the longest thread ever on slightly experimenting with software funding and ownership are interested, I help run a Canadian co-op that is member owned and hosts a Mastodon server, CoSocial https://blog.cosocial.ca
This server I host along with some other apps on a system I call the #CommonsComputer
It’s powered by #Cloudron, for which I pay a subscription in exchange for maintaining and updating both the server & all the apps that I deploy.
I discovered #NodeBB via Cloudron 2 years ago. I am very happy with and highly recommend both products.
And can recommend the actual Cloudron forums for not only the excellent support by staff that goes above & beyond, but also the valuable input from users when it comes to discovery and filtering for quality apps.
If anyone is wondering what the price of using an alternative to Substack is for my (rather humble in terms of audience size) newsletter … gulp. Anyone know of other good, preferably lower price, options?
@ricmac Ghost is a great org, they started around the same time @nodebb did and aimed to revolutionize blogs 🙂
So their pro service helps fund future dev, and that's always a good thing, just like using our hosting service helps us out, even though it's a lot more expensive than something like #cloudron. No obligation to do so of course 😁
Moving 55GB from one #nextcloud to another, from #cloudron to another cloudron stack sharing the same SSHfs storage box, this is so easy it’s a delight 😊
@loppwn@peregus not having PTR, DKIM, SPF, DMARC correctly setup is a killer, but there are great solutions for this nowadays, both #cloudron and #Yunohost take care of that part pretty well
@notsoloud hmmm, true, I could do that indeed but osintua.eu is packaged with via #cloudron/docker and there is no front-end field to tweak the max character...but you're right, I should investigate that further, I will!
Alright, I must admit, this is a nice move by @Gargron and the other main developers. Thank you for sending this email out for those who may not see or hear about the news.
This seems very important and worth ongoing study:
“Once again, results suggest a rise in diversity as the 10 biggest server contribution to the Fediverse is reduced by more than 10%. So, even if the biggest servers are accumulating more users, it seems that the Fediverse is becoming more decentralized.”
Sad to hear that home.social is shutting down. It’s good that they can, but 6000 people have to pick up and move their accounts now, lose their post history, etc. that’s really frustrating.
I wish admins of instances like this had a way to declare “I’m done” and let someone else step in to manage it.
I won’t claim to understand all the factors driving home.social to this point, but if they are amenable, I am certain other admins would take over.
We were discussing some onboarding topics for #cloudron yesterday and were then wondering: What was the biggest hurdle to overcome when starting to #selfhost for you?
What types of services are you not willing to self-host?
For example, something that is too complex for your comfort level, a security concern, or maybe your hardware can’t keep up with the service’s needs?
