Dropped some updates to selfh.st/apps this morning - tiles now have visible/clickable tags, URL properties have been added for sharing custom views with others, and I've added a ton of new project icons.

I'm completely open to feedback on future improvements, but probably won't consider adding any more details to the tiles to prevent them from becoming too cluttered.

Decided to sit down and try to learn despite the fact that I don't have any real need for it on my little home server. Still, it's been interesting and - I won't lie - a bit frustrating at times. It's very much like using a chainsaw to butter my bread for my use case, but I had a nice feeling of satisfaction when I succeeded in getting set up through it. I've had some odd issues with Docker failing to launch certain containers through containerd that I have not been able to figure out, however.

I was putting thought into maybe redoing my server setup with kubernetes but I sincerely worry that I'll run into this same containerd issue with some of my other apps.

I launched a matrix homeserver with open registration at https://matrix.nadeko.net

Hosted on 🇨🇱

Feel free to register.

It also includes:

  • A Whatsapp Bridge
  • and a Telegram Bridge (not tested with private messages)

Since this Matrix instance is selfhosted, the uptime of the instance will not be the BEST and downtimes can happen so use it at your own risk. However, you can see how stable my selfhosted server is here: https://stats.uptimerobot.com/89VnzSKAn/793739181

Been battling to get working with rootless all evening and aren't having much luck. Boo to overly complex things.

It's so close to working well but the whole uid/gid mapping thing just falls apart when the container starts running things as different users. All of a sudden there're large parts of my source tree that I can't edit, not to mention being unable to use artisan make tools.

Excited to launch a new project today that I'm calling selfh.st/companions, a curated list of companion applications for self-hosted software:

https://selfh.st/blog/introducing-selfhst-companions/

The linked post explains the rationale for adding apps to this list, which is a bit smaller than selfh.st/apps.

As usual, feel free to send me a DM or reach out via the site's contact address if you'd like to discuss the project or any of the software listed.

Unless you your own instance, or you're a , you have likely taken for granted.

Behind search for masto is a resource-hungry application called . Sure you might be able to get Masto to run on a , but you won't be running elastic search with it.

Having recently moved my instance to a much more powerful system, I now run ES, and WOW what a difference being able to search post makes! Soooo many times I wanted to reference a toot that had scrolled by but had no way of finding it. Now I do!

Even though I've put some serious resource limits on ES, it's bar none the most resource intensive service running (out of around 25).

Please consider sending a few bucks to the of your instance. Better yet, if you can afford it, sign up for a monthly donation. They need it.

I'm launching a new sister project to the self-hosted apps directory I launched a few weeks ago and am giving the a sneak peek because I need your help!

What are your favorite companion apps for the self-hosted services you deploy?

They must support software that can be self-hosted, be relatively up-to-date, and can be closed source.

Comment below or send me a DM with your suggestions. Thanks!

https://selfh.st/apps update:

I've been overwhelmed with the positive feedback from the community since last week's launch and have been trying to add projects as fast as the requests come in.

Two new features since launch: License details added to the project tiles and a "Recently Added" sort option for users to easily view projects added since their last visit.

Next feature on the list: RSS feed for newly added project notifications

True or False Mastodon Hosting Question that I'm looking for a definitive answer on?
If you already have a personal website at say:
johndoe.com
Then it is not possible to create a Mastodon server where your address would be:
@ john @ johndoe.com

Correct?

Mastodon is often compared to email, but if the above is correct, as I suspect it is because Mastodon is effectively a website, then this is important.

(Spaces added so it doesn't go somewhere unintentional :))

chris, to threads
@chris@mstdn.chrisalemany.ca avatar

I have decided, as a #selfhost with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.

For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.

You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!

So I am going to click on his account and use “undo limit” to remove the limit on his account specifically so that I can boost and reply to his stuff.

A screenshot showing the full admin page with menu on the side ad Accounts selected under Moderation. This is where you go when you click on the stored accounts graph under the threads.net domain federation page. There are a number of accounts listed with their posts, followers, and last active.
A screenshot of stonekettle@threads.net account page in the mastodon admin shows his name and profile pic, his posts, and other stats. It is listed as “Limited”
Same screenshot as previous but now there is a green “Successfully undid limit of stonekettle@threads.net” message and the Login status is now “No limits imposed”
