Upgrade complete.
In case you're wondering, after just over 1 year on my selfhost, the postgresql database for mastodon is 740MB. That's mostly me with a couple other users on this instance thrown in.
And #footiMac continues to chug away. It has been solid. #selfhost#Mastodon
FYI: On the onging #spam#discord issues...
I had started out by just suspending every domain from which the spam was emanating. Then I tried only Limiting a few of them.
Every domain I Limited has returned with more spam. So I am back to suspending all of them. At this point, if the compromised domains aren't aware of the problem then they're probably not going to wake up anytime soon, if ever.
Also, why can I not “select all” from the report menu so that I can limit/suspend a large number at a time for exactly this kind of situation? This seems like basic functionality.
Rather than:
Individually clicking each report—>
New Domain Block—>
Limit/Suspend—>
Confirm.
Repeat x number of times.
It should be:
Select All (up to 20, 50, 100)
Choose Action (Domain Block)
Confirm
List of Domains to Limit/Suspend
Choose Action (Suspend)
Confirm
Back to Reports
Select All
Choose Action (Assign to Mod)
Confirm
Select All
Choose Action (Mark as Resolved)
Confirm
Done.
My understanding of the current #spam issues is that it is people taking advantage of open registration instances. Essentially hijacking.. which is causing small-instance admins like me to domain-block those instances for sanity.
Question: Assuming the spammers will eventually be removed from the victim instances, is there a 'whitelist’ somewhere that #MastoAdmins#SelfHost community could consult so we can unblock domains that should no longer be a problem?
In the last few days I've blocked 9 domains on my #selfhost server. Before that I can't actually remember when I last blocked a domain, six months? Maybe even a year ago when I first installed the instance.
Is there any indication why this surge has happened? #MastoAdmin#spam#bots

@kev if you have a personal server, you might be interested in selfhosting searxng.
You can aggregate searchs from different engines, filter out domains, redirect domains (e.g. reddit.com -> old.reddit.com), etc.
The latest news, software updates and launches (#CarPlay for @homeassistant!), a spotlight on #PiAlert - a network monitoring tool, and more in this week's self-hosted recap!
GULP I did it! Just bought my first dedicated server hosting space! (Debian 12 - 32GB RAM - 4x1TB SATA RAID 10) with the intention of moving my @alberniweather website and other small sites currently hosted on shared space and dying regularly. $CAD60/mo.
Setup backups for my #GitLab instance this evening. I also fixed an issue I had with my #Healthchecks instance and its upgrade to 3.x. And finally I updated my #Plex to #Mastodon script so it strips anything which isn't 'a-zA-Z0-9' from the title tag.
Currently, my "home lab" is just a Raspberry Pi with a micro SD card, but I would like to host Jellyfin for my CD rips and movies. Would it be a bad idea to just buy an HDD drive and a SATA⇄USB3 adapter and plug it into my Pi as storage? I would prefer to buy an internal HDD (as opposed to an external) because I will probably want to expand into a bay later. #selfhosting#selfhost
One step further from the #GAFAM and because I think I will litteraly rip my head off if I use Bing / Google / etm only to be faced with AI spoiled results.
