True or False Mastodon Hosting Question that I'm looking for a definitive answer on?
If you already have a personal website at say:
johndoe.com
Then it is not possible to create a Mastodon server where your address would be:
@ john @ johndoe.com

Correct?

Mastodon is often compared to email, but if the above is correct, as I suspect it is because Mastodon is effectively a website, then this is important.

(Spaces added so it doesn't go somewhere unintentional :))

@chris false. I got the mastodon user [@]michael[@]thms.uk despite having a website at https://thms.uk

Look up WEB_DOMAIN and LOCAL_DOMAIN in the docs: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/

One caveat: you must do this BEFORE you first start using your mastodon instance. You cannot change either of these on a running instance.

(Also some clients don’t display the username correctly. I.e. some clients will display my name as [@]michael[@]mstdn.thms.uk, but they will support at-mentioning and searching just fine, so it’s just a display issue)

@michael I'm a little sad I didn't explore this more at the beginning when I set up my own account, but it is what it is :) Now I know for others!

@chris yeah, neither did I. I changed it anyway after about 12 hours of starting my instance.

As a consequence a very small number of instances have two copies of my account. One at mstdn.thms.uk, the other at thms.uk.

Definitely wouldn’t recommend it on an established instance 😬

@chris you could have the server software (mastodon or similar) accesible at Johndoe.com, Johndoe.com/folder or subdomain.johndoe.com

and then you could set it up the domain as @johndoe.com and any users you wish @john, @kate, etc, by setting up the .well-known and the webfingers and all of that in the main domain (so when another server tries to find where @john resides, it points to the right direction)

@chris Yes, this can be done:

"WEB_DOMAIN is an optional environment variable allowing the installation of Mastodon on one domain, while having the users’ handles on a different domain, e.g. addressing users as @alice but accessing Mastodon on mastodon.example.com."

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#web_domain

@stefan aaaahhh! So it can be effectively done! Now I wish I had done that with mine!

Do you know of any 3rd party mastodon host providers that support that?

stefan,
@stefan@stefanbohacek.online avatar

@chris Sorry, I haven't really looked at the hosting providers in too much depth, beyond collecting a list here:
