@beardedtechguy and myself are looking for someone that is willing, able and has time to help us with infrastructure related things.
We are looking to fully self host our instance so that we have full control over everything related to the instance. This means we need/want someone that has experience running a self hosted instance and has the time to help Kyle with things when he's not around to do various things. (cont...)
I've received my first "report" on hugs.lgbt and I'm very confused ....
Two posts were reported ... neither were from hugs.lgbt posts ... one was a reply to one of my posts by a mutual, the other was a post by that mutual without any hugs.lgbt involvement ...
Did I receive the report because one of those was a reply to a post of mine?
But why the other one?
Also very confused as to why ... the first was a thank you reply to a post from me.
The other was a meme.
The category was "other" but no notes or any other information that I could discern 🤔 🤷♂️
🇺🇦 Sharing #fediverse data on Ukrainian instances by eQualitie
👉 As of March 2024, 10 Mastodon instances by https://dcomm.net.ua/ are the home for 1569 users (+2,6% from previous 6 months), who published 178 431 toots (+ 71,5% from previous 6 months)
Inspired by a Tim Chambers post (@tchambers), I've enabled the relay between us and Flipboard's Mastodon server (Flipboard.social) so that everything posted there will be available here, in parallel.
This should enhance search results as searches will now include all their content and all their active user accounts.
In which I discuss Canada's proposed #OnlineHarmsAct from the perspective of a #fediverse#admin. While I understand the reason for the Act, I also note it could likely put a burden on fedi admins. And the big question I have is: how will the Act define the fediverse?

What's the best way to tidy up the public/system/cache folder in a #Mastodon instance?
My public/system/media_attachments is on 3.3GB.
However, public/system/cache/media_attachments is 22GB!
Similarly, public/system/accounts is 97MB, whereas cache/accounts is 22GB
How should I clear down this massive cache?
I've tried tootctl cache clear but nothing seems to change in the cache folder.
In total the cache folder is 55GB, everything outwith cache consumes only 6GB. It's making my backups massive and long to run.
#MorningAll & #TZAG G’day Squirrel Fans, hope I find you bright eyed & bushy tailed!
So someone has broken my primary instance, mastodonapp.uk, & @MaJ1 is unable to join us this morning 😔
I’m betting @wild1145 is on the case & sorting it for us , he’s a top #Admin
To the person who broked da interweb , most likely by pressing the button that says “Don’t Press this Button!”,I can only say (in Liam Neeson’s voice) -
I have a special set of skills, I will find you , I’m coming for your nuts !
Everyone else - have a cracking day #Today & remember #RuleNo1: Don’t let ‘em Cash-ew ! 😊🫶🐿️🖖
I have decided, as a #selfhost with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.
For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.
You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!
As the #admin of https://mastodon.projetretro.io, I want to acknowledge that for the moment I don't plan on limiting, blocking or defederate with threads.net.
I run a couple of Fediverse servers; on a daily basis the delivery queue can build up as it tries to deliver to non-responsive servers. I need to know if this is a temporary issue, or a longer-term problem spanning many days -- in which case I may stop delivery to the server.
#FediCheck was born. It's simple but useful (to me at least). I'm putting it out in the wild today for others to test.
The SPAM wave has caused ppl to beg for server providers to start acting like police officers, like a Zuckerberg or Musk, to resolve the issue
The problem is that now action is being taken without consent from the perceived affected servers. On #MastoHost, a moderation-task automation script has been run. And now we've opened a Pandora's box about what sorts of future, nonconsensual interventions, that providers will allow themselves.
