Yep, I agree.

Reputation matters more with Mastodon because a server Admin can block an entire other server. A power I think that is abused by many Admins.

I agree, there is some line between censorship and decency that needs to be determined.

In this case, in my mind, I substituted "Trump" in his sentence, for his intended target, and asked myself if I would still react to the post, if it was aimed at Trump. It passed the Trump test. I didn't like the unnecessary raging cursing, despite the target.

I don't want this server to have a reputation of sending out endless cursing. Posts with nothing but cursing have 0 intelligent thought behind it. It's noise in the Fediverse. It's like a dog barking, except more deranged.

I, personally, don't care if I get blocked, but I do care if this server gets blocked because it's not just about me.

I ask for opinions because I recognize that I may learn something listening to other people, and it could change my thinking.

Some people attacked me for even asking. One telling me that if I need to ask, then I shouldn't be an admin. Another accusing me of supporting genocide.

I'm good at not letting people get to me. But, it's discouraging sometimes.

Our alternative Mastodon UI at https://phanpy.hear-me.social has just been upgraded to the latest version.

I use Phanpy 99% of the time when I use Mastodon in the browser. I think the UI is superior to the one that comes with Mastodon. Reading posts is so much nicer. You should give a look see if you haven't checked it out.

Nope, but delete & redraft will work.

The problem is that changing the privacy makes it complicated. All other servers need to be notified. Then they need to figure out if they should delete messages or not for particular users. Then you'd have to hope that all the different apps (Mastodon, pleroma, sharkey, lemmy....) would handle it properly.

Better to delete, which all apps understand and implement, and then resend it.

I just upgraded https://phanpy.hear-me.social to the latest #Phanpy release.

Phanpy is a fantastic alternative UI to Mastodon. I spend 98% of my time in Phanpy instead of using the Mastodon UI while on the web. I highly recommend you give it a try if you haven't already.

#Peertube instance, https://my-sunshine.video, has been upgraded to V6.1.

Videos appear to stream more smoothly when watched on the web.

I had to disable the new account export feature, for now. It's very broken in the docker version and causes crashes.

The view count bumps up after 10 seconds in this version, instead of 30 seconds, which is good since a lot of posted videos are under 30-seconds.

Free to use for anyone who doesn't want advertisements on their videos.

I'm putting this under because I've noticed that since 12 PM EDT yesterday (30-Apr-2024), API requests coming in from 216.106.86.232 have been returning 500 errors constantly from my server. No other 500 errors were being returned.

I blocked the IP at the Cloudflare firewall and now the 500 errors have stopped. There were more than 93K 500 return codes in total until now!

I have no idea what the requests are, and it's too late at night to do more research, but I'm passing this along to other Admins as a warning and to see if anyone else is seeing similar behavior.

Here's what I see in Cloudflare for the last one hour before blocking the IP address. Notice all the requests returning 500 are from this single IP. There are no page views. It's all API requests. And 500 errors stopped after I blocked it.

Any insights would be appreciated.

I wondered about this, but the volume is about 2000/hour which isn't enough to really impact. And the calls it's making are pulling small amounts of data.

If this were meant to strain the server, I think they could have picked worse APIs. I feel someone is experimenting. Maybe not realizing they are being annoying?

Inspired by a Tim Chambers post (@tchambers), I've enabled the relay between us and Flipboard's Mastodon server (Flipboard.social) so that everything posted there will be available here, in parallel.

This should enhance search results as searches will now include all their content and all their active user accounts.

If anyone is interested in having a () account, but doesn't want their data or their identities managed, or stored on the Bluesky corporate server, you can instead join a private server, a PDS (Personal Data Server). This is part of their "federated" architecture, similar to ActivityPub that Mastodon uses.

I run a , https://blue-ocean.social. PDS servers have no web interface, so if you use this URL it won't see anything exciting other than it telling you it's a PDS.

My Bluesky handle is jerry.blue-ocean.social. Most people have a handle like person.bsky.social

It's in beta, which means that any PDS cannot have more than 10 users, there is a limit of 15,000 events/day, and 1,500 events/hour. This is a lot of events, actually.

I cannot see other people's data or access their identity data on the server. The only moderation is that I can delete or lock an account, but I cannot block anyone or any servers. It's not like Mastodon and other Fediverse apps.

If you would like a Bluesky account that is stored away from Bluesky corporate, please let me know, and I will send you an invitation code (it's the only way to register onto a PDS).

The server is automatically backed up daily by Digital Ocean (warm backup). I take the server down for 3 minutes/week for a cold back up and to apply Linux updates. Otherwise, it's rock solid. The Bluesky software updates itself, so there's no downtime for those updates.

I can give out 8 more invite codes and can send instructions for how to get started.

Please let me know if you'd like an invitation code.

A THREAD ON THREADS!

I’m receiving lots of questions about our position on federation with Threads and realised I haven’t posted on this subject for a while.

We have lots of users who do want to federate with Threads, and lots of users who don’t. It’s my job to find a good solution that works for everyone.

Our position has always been to start from a defensive stance due to our technical and moderation concerns.

So what sort of solution do we think might keep (almost) everyone happy?

I take a similar approach here. The only other thing that I do is that, while I have threads.net limited, I do remove the limit individually on some accounts, like Potus, well-known journalists, and Obama, for example.

President Biden has turned on the Federation option for his Threads account!

While we have threads.net limited here because of the expectation of poor moderation, his account, as well as a number of others, have been exempted from limiting and can be followed in hear-me.social the same as any Mastodon account.

Remember, though, the feature is in beta. It's one way. You can read posts from #Threads accounts, but those accounts cannot yet see replies, nor can they see who favorited or boosted their posts.

    While #threads.net (#Threads) remains limited on hear-me.social over concerns that moderation may not meet our standards, as we do with any server that doesn't meet our standards, we have removed the limitation on a number of individual Threads accounts so they can be boosted here, so those people can freely follow people here, etc.

    If you want me to remove the limit on any other individual Threads account, just DM me.

    Today, #Threads turned on Fediverse integration for all their accounts. Only "public" Threads accounts, and those accounts that opt into Fediverse integration, can post to the Fediverse.

    It's still in beta, so some functions are not available yet and other restrictions apply. But, posts from Threads are supposed to reach followers on Mastodon servers. This change at Threads impacts us at hear-me.social.

    Admins, has anyone seen any high activity in their database starting at exactly 11:43 AM EDT and continuing until exactly 12 PM EDT? In these 7 minutes, my DB CPU was pegged at over 95% (normally runs at 40% steady) and the database grew by about 400MB in just those 7 minutes.

    Is it just my server? Does anyone know what might cause this sudden influx of data?

    I do relay with many servers.

    Insight appreciated.

    I'm debating releasing the client and server code for Loops when the public beta is ready or holding off until v1.

    Unlike the @pixelfed app, Loops is a lot simpler and won't take as long to reach v1.

    I want to release it early, but at the same time, I don't want to deal with support from people who are running it in production.

    The public beta should be ready in the next week, and I'll be inviting a few people to the TestFlight (iOS only for now).

    I am excited about hosting a Loops server when it's available. I've been hoping that a TikTok-type Fediverse app would become available.

    I think it would be a good for all of us who are interested in hosting the application to see it, and play with it, as early as possible, with the understanding that it's released "as is" with no support. It's fine.

    Today I did some playing around with #phanpy.

    Currently, https://phanpy.hear-me.social uses the pre-built image.

    But, I've been wanting to build the application myself because then it allows a bit of customization. While the pre-built version has no default login instance nor default sign-up instance, building it myself lets me make hear-me.social the defaults (although using it with other instances is still supported).

    For the next few weeks, phanpy.hear-me.social will continue to reference the pre-built version, while https://phanpydev.hear-me.social references the custom-built version. I will personally use the custom version and if I don't experience problems, I will make it the standard here.

    If anyone is using phanpy on hear-me.social, it would be great if you can try using the phanpydev version instead to help me test it.

    You may need to log into phanpydev twice to get it to show posts. Sometimes I saw a blank home page after the first log in after switching from phanpy to phanpydev.

    For those who haven't used Phanpy, the alternative Mastodon UI, you ought to try it. Reading messages is just much more pleasant.
