Hello everyone. I have joined Mastodon!

I am an artist and room mate to a cat named Sparkle.

I enjoy creating physical creative things and giving it to people for free. Lately that's been making zines to mail to friends/leave in inconspicuous public locations. Here's a photo of a Kodama I made out of sculpey and left in a public park's tree.

I am not good at capitalism, marketing myself or my art, and I resent the push to make my art into content for instagram/tiktok/etc.

I'm new and excited to be here? I've been looking for ways to be connected and have services available, but keep privacy and security top of mind. My efforts have been focused on my home network, but I'm starting to broaden that to social media. I've always had a beef with SM and have hated how irrelevant it can be.

Enter Mastodon.

In many ways this is just an experiment, but it is one that I hope takes off and is, for me, successful.

A bit about me: I'm a nerd, pure and simple. I love Star Trek, reading (anything), science/tech, DnD (Monks for the win!), woodworking, and astronomy. I'm currently looking for ways to combine hobbies (like building a 3d-printed & wood framed telescope).

I am a former member of a cult...long story. and am in a lengthy process of discovering...we...me.

I use all pronouns, so don't worry about accidentally using the wrong ones.

I'm bisexual, but I do have a partner, so don't hit on me lol (thats a joke btw)

uhh yeah I might sound weird at times, I'm VERY neuroatypical, I have ADD (ADHD minus the hyperactive) and maybe Autism or at least a lot of autistic tendencies (looking back on that, it sounds a bit rude towards people actually on the spectrum , i mean no harm i just dont know how to word things better)

I was hit with a pretty interesting report the other day - a user claimed some instance replicated their profile which isn't their official or real account.

I tried looking into the account or instance, but was immediately forwarded to spam and advertisement sites.

The instance is https://t.l3r.me/ identifies itself as a BirdSiteLIVE instance, that at least explains a "duplicate" account (the user was probably confused because this site imported their Twitter account with the same handle and name). However, I am not aware of any BirdSiteLIVE instance that automatically imports any user's accounts so that other instances index it allowing a user to discover it?

I tried importing my own Twitter account, which I don't use, and it didn't work. So it is not a functional BirdSiteLIVE instance (anymore)!

That is not the important part, however, what matters is that when you try to resolve the link, open an account on their page or interact with this domain at all, you're forwarded to advertisement webpages.

Maybe there's a possibility that this used to be a working Fedi instance and then once it was turned off the domain host turned it into a domain parking page for generating money through clicks (which would explain the ads).

The idea of an instance that duplicates profiles in order to generate fake clicks in order to make money off of ads seemed pretty grim, however.

Just wanted to share my findings! Stay away from this “instance”, block it, and delete everything stored in association with it!

flipboard.com is a remarkable collection of accounts that are connected to the Fediverse. There are 5,757 accounts from them that are known on this server (we relay with them and get all their content), and these accounts post about every topic imaginable.

You can follow any of their accounts on your favorite Fediverse app! It's great!

I relay with their server so that searches return a richer result set.

Today, I had to create an extra sidekiq process just to handle the surge of posts from them. But, I think it's worth it.

If you have a specific interest, you might find an appropriate account to follow. I'll be looking through their accounts.

I know there's a lot of people on the fediverse that feel very differently, but I'm excited about #Threads finally testing #fediverse integration with a public beta. The amount of people I've seen on Threads asking what the fediverse is since this was announced is staggering. If nothing else, I think this will help bring the wider fediverse more into the mainstream.

Loops is a separate project from @pixelfed

You will be able to use your PF account to login/join, but you will have a separate fedi account

I'm keeping Pixelfed focused around photo sharing, you won't need to worry about us integrating #loops into our main app!

Similar to Sup, we're keeping this separate, but easily accessible from the main app

Also, I'm looking for a project manager for Loops to takeover when ready so I can focus on coding and they tell me what to do!

I'm debating releasing the client and server code for Loops when the public beta is ready or holding off until v1.

Unlike the @pixelfed app, Loops is a lot simpler and won't take as long to reach v1.

I want to release it early, but at the same time, I don't want to deal with support from people who are running it in production.

The public beta should be ready in the next week, and I'll be inviting a few people to the TestFlight (iOS only for now).

#mastoadmin lets improve our resilience against attacks and make this hashtag more usable. If you look at the past postings, the only messages I see are “oh yah we blocked some spam” or “xyz.social upgraded to the latest version”.
It took for upstream to post hints in their changelog on how to combat the current spam wave, even though we as admins all knew how to fight it much earlier.

1. Lets openly discuss attack vector/profile
2. Which CIDRs are the attacks coming from?
3. What MX can we block?
4. Other helpful guidelines (hCaptcha)

Maybe even have a github repo to keep it transparent / single source of truth?

I am so sorry for everyone on the Fediverse who has to deal with the enormous amount of spam the past few days♥️

Most admins and mods are trying to deal with it as fast as possible but the issue is that the spam comes from so many smaller instances that we simple need to limit the instances or ban individual spam accounts otherwise they would lose all connections on a full ban.. that’s not what we want

There is an ongoing spam attack on the fediverse for the last couple of days. It's more widespread than before, as attackers are targeting smaller servers to create accounts. Before, usually only mastodon.social was targeted and our team could take care of it. For server administrators out there: If you don't need open registrations, switch over to approval mode. If you do, blocking disposable e-mail providers is a massive stopgap to the problem. Mastodon also supports hCaptcha.
