As instance #admin I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.
I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.
The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.
In which I discuss Canada's proposed #OnlineHarmsAct from the perspective of a #fediverse#admin. While I understand the reason for the Act, I also note it could likely put a burden on fedi admins. And the big question I have is: how will the Act define the fediverse?

Right now I have more questions than concrete plans, though I think I will try to use something besides #Mastodon. And it will be a single or few-user instance, at least to start.
I'm curious what hot tips and cautionary tales people have as I get started? Anything I MUST or MUST NOT do? Or read?
Moin zusammen,
After thinking more and discussing with people here, synapse.cafe will defederate from any meta platform until further notice.
My main concerns are about monetization of our community, having to deal with corporate policing of our content, and potentially harassment from an influx of users.
Besides, as many others have mentioned, Meta has a bad record with regards to privacy and human rights, and there's no reason to expect their upcoming social platforms will be any different.
Survey - how do you promote your Mastodon instance? I'm thinking of writing a letter to the editor to the local news website. Can anyone point me to examples of a letter to the editor? Since our instance is focused on the Atlanta region, a local news website makes sense. Maybe other instances would write to a magazine that serves the same community. #Mastodon#fediverse#admin
Heads up #mastodon#admin#mastoadmin, there is a concurrent disclosure and release planned for what sounds like major vulnerabilities. Be prepared to upgrade you servers as soon as these fixes drop
Ich bin zwar nicht auf der Suche nach 'nem neuen Job, aber den hier finde ich ja schon irgendwie außergewöhnlich: Admin wird für ein Forschungsschiff gesucht
Before executing important commands and scripts over #SSH, use #screen in case of disconnect. If your connection drops or you close the terminal, you can SSH back in and enter screen -r to recover from where you left off. Being reunited with that hanging command prompt will be a relief! #tuesdaytip#gnu#linux#cli#admin
Inspired by a Tim Chambers post (@tchambers), I've enabled the relay between us and Flipboard's Mastodon server (Flipboard.social) so that everything posted there will be available here, in parallel.
This should enhance search results as searches will now include all their content and all their active user accounts.
I have decided, as a #selfhost with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.
For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.
You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!
After the discovery of a racist account yesterday, @PSiReN went through other accounts on the instance and discovered the instance is a cesspit of racism, including constant use of the N word, and accusations that minorities are criminals.
Therefore Syzito.xyz is defederating from its first instance, @mugicha.club.
What is normal etiquette in these circumstances, should we ping their admin? #Mastodon#Admin#Fediblock
For the benefit of the #mastodon#admin and community, here are the instances we had to defederate from following the pile on by racists following the defederation of mugicha.club.
Note for others, if you want us to re-federate with a server, polite discourse without bigotry would be your best bet.
Syzito.xyz is a zero tolerance to bigotry space. Your free speech does not include harm to others here.
