As instance I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.

I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.

The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.

Some words about Mastodon moderation:

  1. It’s hard. No decision is easy and there’s lots of gray area even with explicit rules.
  2. We’ll sometimes debate for a long time on a single post. We do our best to make the right call.
  3. Even so, we sometimes make mistakes. We’re willing to accept appeals when that happens.
  4. We get a lot of things right. You can’t even imagine some of the traumatic things we see.

With news of the probable launch of Meta's #Project92 I wanted to make clear this servers policy:

"Don't preemptively strike meta w/ a fediblock, but stay vigilant with eyes wide open and a finger on the block button."

The same as we do for all servers.

They can be blocked instantly if they violate our terms of use, and as admins are in a far stronger position if we do so than vs before.

I hope all #fediadmins to consider taking this same policy. 1 of X 🧵

Introducing Citadel! Citadel makes it quick and easy to suspend spammers and send reports to their admins - in one click!

Eventually Citadel will have more tools, but I wanted to get this out ASAP to help server admins.

Give it a shot: https://citadel.samw.dev

The handmade.social instance will be shutting down on September 15th.

Any way the fediverse can help @maker keep it going?

I'm starting to spec out a instance!

Right now I have more questions than concrete plans, though I think I will try to use something besides . And it will be a single or few-user instance, at least to start.

I'm curious what hot tips and cautionary tales people have as I get started? Anything I MUST or MUST NOT do? Or read?

For people who run their own fediverse server, what was the biggest reason for this?

Moin zusammen,

For those #servers that blocked techtoots.com during the spamfest - I’m happy to report that as of last week we’ve eliminated all spam accounts.

After thinking more and discussing with people here, synapse.cafe will defederate from any meta platform until further notice.

My main concerns are about monetization of our community, having to deal with corporate policing of our content, and potentially harassment from an influx of users.

Besides, as many others have mentioned, Meta has a bad record with regards to privacy and human rights, and there's no reason to expect their upcoming social platforms will be any different.

Dear Synthwave.social,

It's with a heavy heart that I must share some news about our community.

Due to rising costs, we'll cease operations at year-end.
I'm grateful for your support, and I apologize for any inconvenience.

Migrate your account using this guide: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2019/06/how-to-migrate-from-one-server-to-another

Thank you for being part of our community.
If you have any questions about the shutdown, feel free to reach out to me.

Please boost for visibility.

Survey - how do you promote your Mastodon instance? I'm thinking of writing a letter to the editor to the local news website. Can anyone point me to examples of a letter to the editor? Since our instance is focused on the Atlanta region, a local news website makes sense. Maybe other instances would write to a magazine that serves the same community.

FYI: suspended about a dozen new crypto spam accounts to keep this servers timeline clean.

The one's I'm seeing now were on Mastodon.world - and clearly migrated there after being moderated away at Mastodon.social.

This is an issue for all admins, not just Mastodon.social and good that we all manage/block/nuke this together.

All part and parcel with the Fediverse getting bigger, now it's a target for junk like this. Still FAR better resilliance here than Twitter.

Inspired by a Tim Chambers post (@tchambers), I've enabled the relay between us and Flipboard's Mastodon server (Flipboard.social) so that everything posted there will be available here, in parallel.

This should enhance search results as searches will now include all their content and all their active user accounts.

The information comes from https://flipboard.team/the-kitchen-sink/federating-with-flipboard-com

I have decided, as a with just two other people on my instance, that I'm going to limit threads.net following the example of @Jerry quoted below. I didn't know that you can “unlimit” specific accounts! This is an interesting option.

For other admins who might not be familiar, I am discovering this too for the first time:
When you ‘Limit' a domain (under Federation—>Add new domain block) and then click on that domain in the list it brings you to the screen in the first picture.

You can then see which accounts have been organically “stored" (i think of it more like being "noticed”) by the server. I’m excited that @stonekettle is there! I miss him!

So I am going to click on his account and use “undo limit” to remove the limit on his account specifically so that I can boost and reply to his stuff.

A screenshot showing the full admin page with menu on the side ad Accounts selected under Moderation. This is where you go when you click on the stored accounts graph under the threads.net domain federation page. There are a number of accounts listed with their posts, followers, and last active.
A screenshot of stonekettle@threads.net account page in the mastodon admin shows his name and profile pic, his posts, and other stats. It is listed as “Limited”
Same screenshot as previous but now there is a green “Successfully undid limit of stonekettle@threads.net” message and the Login status is now “No limits imposed”

After the discovery of a racist account yesterday, @PSiReN went through other accounts on the instance and discovered the instance is a cesspit of racism, including constant use of the N word, and accusations that minorities are criminals.

Therefore Syzito.xyz is defederating from its first instance, @mugicha.club.

What is normal etiquette in these circumstances, should we ping their admin? #Mastodon #Admin #Fediblock

@PSiReN

For the benefit of the #mastodon #admin and community, here are the instances we had to defederate from following the pile on by racists following the defederation of mugicha.club.

Note for others, if you want us to re-federate with a server, polite discourse without bigotry would be your best bet.

Syzito.xyz is a zero tolerance to bigotry space. Your free speech does not include harm to others here.
