Oh Klasse.
With #H5N1#birdflu spreading amongst dairy cows, one of the most important things to think about right now is what would need to happen for this virus to actually start a pandemic.
I'm on a train, so a brief thread...
In Poland dozens of #cats have died from an illness that now seems to be due to #H5N1 infection (some of the investigated cats tested positive for the flu strain).
It's still unclear whether this outbreak was due to all cats eating infected birds, or due to cat-to-cat transmission. The unusually high number of infected mammals does suggest the latter to me (think of what we saw in mink and seals).
This is an important outbreak to monitor, especially if it spreads.
A reminder: epidemics and pandemics are expected to increase in frequency as the climate crisis advances [1] and as humans build deeper into wildlands [2].
So what do we do?
Address the climate crisis!
Embrace urbanism, controlled growth, and leave wildlands alone.
Push for infrastructure improvements for indoor air quality.
Push for better healthcare and sick leave policies.
Advocate for better funding for scientific research.
"Vets are being advised to wear full PPE (personal protection) if seeing a cat with neurological symptoms, after forty cats died on a dairy farm in New Mexico. The virus has proved 100% fatal and cats die within 24-48 hours.
Is it safe to consume dairy products? The answer for RAW products is NO. The virus has been detected in unpasteurised milk."
