2nd album she released this amazing gem for fans, whole album of remixes alongside, but flipped away from her lilting folk chanteuse sound, into 8bit c64 NES dance territory.
Fun to put same track pushing the remix envelope out back to back & no context for ppl.

With their music videos you always know you're getting something else. It's not just imagery and mood with Fall Out Boy it's usually a high concept fully fleshed out world. A complete story, a parable, a fairytale, often with a twist in that tail.
A film in 4 minutes, just with great music rather than dialogue. Case in point.
The opening words to this standout from Drake. It's a good track, but even if it's not really your jam you should watch it anyway (at least once). You'd need a heart of stone not to feel an uplift from the people in this video.

Best way really to experience Fela Kuti's afrobeats is as a whole album. Some tracks are 15mins long, but you won't mind. Some songs he lets the band build for longer than regular tracks before he comes in with the vocals. It's not about radio friendly or fitting between commercials. His albums build a hypnotic rhythm through each song to song. Here's a taster, a slimmed down 6minute edit of Lady.

You probably remember song, but did you really watch the incredible 1 shot vid? Fantastic choreography w/ real expression. So many music videos w/ massive budgets end up being pretty generic & forgettable. This was shot with skill & talent not just bludgeoned with budget.

The Kiesza - Hideaway video above makes me think of this superbly executed 1 shot music video which is really clever & pretty unknown. Music for the Mature B-Boy is DJ Format's debut gem of an album from 2003.

The The in 1983, this music vid recently got a remaster HD (1080p). A beautiful lilting pop synth track from the new wave era. It's off their debut album Soul Mining which went fairly unnoticed until after when albums like Infected, Dusk etc got more attention. The background images are so obviously a British seaside town, but I don't recognise precisely which one that is.
Music videos were often so basic mid 80s. But I loved the animation in this video. You only got to see it a few times if you caught it on TV, unless were lucky & had an early VCR running before track started etc
A time when cassettes & making mixtapes for people (often off records) was a big deal. Access to music was so different. I had this on tape because I was given it by a GF in a mixtape.
One of my favourite music videos. From the same period (probably 86 at a guess). Had animation from Aardman studios of claymation Creature Comforts fame & later Wallace & Gromit & many other things.
Chilean hiphop act Makiza. Great track, where they really leaned in to their vibe, like building together pipes, double bass, handclaps & percussive breath.
Oscillating tween trad Latin sounds like Mariachi to rap rock & metal influence this is Molotov from Mexico City.
I had their debut album in the car & used to drive to it quite a bit. Mix of diff styles kept things interesting in days of only 6disc CD changers all the way back in the boot of the car. This'll be later 90s. Fair warning their lyrics are often NSFW if you have any Spanish.
Cyprus Hill's, Insane in the Brain is a classic track, but I really love this reggae version from Prince Fatty though. Gives me a music happy to see a track taken in a totally fun different direction.
I come back to this track quite regularly. I listened to it yesterday. I'm listening to it again today. The skill is incredible, but above that it's the feeling in the performances. Music that lifts you up. Time to share it.
Yet listen to the haunting layered sound that Olly & Gale produce. Already an amazingly assured sound right away from their 1st LP The Optimist (2001), which this track is taken from.
Many good tracks on the debut Wet Leg album. This is possibly my favourite. Also the videos are clever, getting masses of style out of their budgets too.
Nicely chill but upbeat electronica reggae flavoured track. Stick figure is great flexible daytime sounds, you can relax to it, or be getting some stuff done to it.
This song is such a pillar of the end 80s thru 90s Madchester scene but endured beyond it sort of doesn't quite entirely fit in to my brain that people may have never heard it.
If an urn of my ashes, are getting scattered in to the waves before everyone goes for a good session in the pub, this song should probably be playing on whatever the equivalent of bluetooth speaker is at that point.
Some really innovative music has come out of Bristol, especially in the 90s. The album Maxinquaye was an epicenter instigator for the TripHop scene. The video is nearly as hypnotic as the track.
Awesome track from early 2000s. If you missed Goldfrapp, they're a solid recommend. Pretty sure this was off the 2nd album. Dirty bass electronica layered under her captivating vocals.

Beautiful upbeat, childlike but haunting folk track. This track feels like some of the leftover warmly comforting emotions of half remembered good memories from childhood, with the full meaning and detail somehow just fogged up beyond your grasp.
Not sure how else to persuade you to try this track if you don't know it. Another awesome export from NZ.

I'm always slightly mad at the song "I Just Called to Say I Love You" because it's the song a lot of people pegged Stevie Wonder on, which has prevented them from discovering all his other stuff.
2 of the greatest whole albums ever made (in my view) are Innervisions & Talking Book. Here's 1 track from Talking Book.
We're so busy these days. So many constant distractions, updates & so much input all the time. Once in a while it's really good to carve out time (maybe focused on a single task or even just as time for self care) and to do a whole album, ideally without distractions, experience it as it was intended and lower your input/stress levels. It can be quite restful. If you're not sold on the self-care, pair this time with some repetitive but productive fairly low attention task.
The Talking Book album and the Innervisions album, they're very solid recommends for carving out some whole album time to task focus or just for recharge selfcare. Cut the notifications & updates & task switches & varied input and do 1 thing while an album evolves.
Because I was delivering some advice... of course there was only 1 track I could choose from Innervisions. 😉
Trip hop legends Faithless blending a mass of influences, indie rock, trip hop, DnB in this track. Listen close and you catch the drum n bass flavours spicing the beats. RIP Maxi Jazz.
The Madmax inspired music video is a good laugh & well worth a watch. I always find myself both thinking I'd take more of the DnB section, but also this '98 track was cleverly packaging Drum N Bass for people who hadn't tried it. Small enough bites to get used to the idea. Leave them wanting more.
Incidentally the Apollo 440 remix is great, but you'll miss the vid.
Seminal 2002 album Original Pirate Material & in particular this track did push things forward.
Fusion of Reggae, Garage, Drum N Bass with an unapologetically UK spittin style full of storytelling & commentary. It carved out some new musical space. A lot of grime writing followed after as social commentary, turning away from garage 2step club/party scene.
Often shortened to The Hip. Canadian staples, The Tragically Hip with +3decade career from mid 80s through to late 10s. About 15 albums / EPs to explore. RIP Gord Downie.
It's incredibly reductive to try & pick between the sheer amount of fantastic Dave Matthews Band tracks. Quite often they put together a lot of complex arrangements, syncopated rhythms, time signature & technical stuff going on in DMB, bit like many Sting tracks. DMB sounds great, it doesn't let the cleverness take over the listenability.
The studio version of this track is like 5-6mins with a great jam section. However if you're lucky enough to see Dave live they often dive in to the joy of the jam on this track. Here's a 9minute example. I swear they were jamming evolutions through this track for a good 15mins one of the times I saw them.
Crowd just swaying. Drinking in the notes, rhythm transfixed. They let you a moment's silence to breathe & there's this surge through the audience when they take it up again.
Playing the crowd as much as playing the instruments. So good live.

Across all those different big nights out of the 90s. For me 1 track stands tall with a foot in all camps. You'd hear it in bars, in night clubs, in dance venues with techno heads suddenly going bouncing hiphop for a min, in house parties, in rock nights. It got play in every camp.
The Prodigy loved to provoke & break the rules. Banned from basically everywhere this (tougher to find now) music vid caused a huge stir when it was released.
A lot of fairly predictable types of people lined up to say this video marked the end of society.
Replenish & Glow. Both superb 90s rock albums. Remember minidiscs? 1 of the tracks, probably off Replenish, was used for early minidisc adverts if I'm remembering right.

Low golden January sun slanting in through the window, and hitting my desk. I don't know what frosts may be in store for the confused flowers in the garden, but it certainly doesn't feel like winter today.
While I loved the '99 album Motion it felt like the track Channel 1 Suite was for me the standout, packed with potential. It was heading off, away, down an exciting path.
There is a film soundtrack reworking of Every Day, which adds only a couple new tracks, cuts some tracks down (snip Roots Manuva) and leaves some tracks out.
Most of the tracks appear on both. Every Day is the superior album listen in my view.
This song is just incredible art, amazing music, whichever album you listen from.

The Live in the City of Light version. I had the 90m cassette tape in car/s for years through the 80s & early 90s. Cassettes in the car stereo, later CD changer in the boot.
Pretty sure that cassette was amongst tapes I swapped for tapes of Shurik'n(IAM), McSolaar etc in France early 90s.
Chaka Khan's mid 80s cover is one of those good cover departures that I really enjoy because it feels like it properly stands as it's own song vs Prince's 79 original.
Portishead's Dummy in 1994 changed music, for a lot of people. Music became a little bit wider afterwards. Triphop was here now, and it was mainstream.

I had the entire The Cure catalogue as LPs in the 80s. I also had a tall floor light with 5 spots with individual switches. Some of the bulbs may have been coloured, red blue etc. These facts are not entirely unrelated.
Pretty decent album as I recall. I should listen again. This track was prolific around the Millenium. Especially with bar/venue/club staff wanting you to now go be elsewhere. 😉
Welcome to the Cruel World is a classy album. But 1 song sort of doesn't quite slot alongside the rest & I love it for doing it's own thing on the album.
Not hugely well known outside of Italy, DJ, producer & instrumentalist Fab Samperi.
Both Moonshine Crossroads & Power Bossa (and the remix album is good too) are well worth checking out, real mashup of styles on there, every song is pulling in quite different genres. This one is a bubbly housey 8bit flavour.
I do love celtic, Irish & Scots trad folky songs. It's beautiful just as music, but it's also fun to watch the lyrics to this unfold as a sort of tongue twister in Scots Gaelic.
I thought Terry Christian handled it pretty well when one of rocking grunge act L7 decided to strip off during live music show The Word. Mildly #NSFW video.

1993 B-side remix (of his own track) from the formidable LTJ Bukem. Great use of the harp & vocals, the worldbeat flavours in the percussion & overall floaty triphop sensibility to this jungle.
This new track kicks. It's just got a video & it's a great watch. Appreciate in camera rather than post production techniques sometimes. Fun budget friendly concept & solid v.edit.

I had a few excellent sitar, bhangra & other albums on minidisc I swapped albums etc to get in 90s & 00s. I sort of lost quite a bit of that stuff with moving away from minidiscs.
90s 00s music press, radioDJs etc used to drop so much adversarial chat on Blur vs. Oasis. Gladiatorial singles chart, choose your team, bollocks. Pointless when both had good songs.
I heard this song at just the right moment for it to lift me. Which will always make this song special, at least for me. Hmm... hard to put in exactly right words.

'97 Wasn't a ton of piano rock with harmonies in the late 90s. Their first album got quite a bit of attention, particularly the Brick song. I liked most of the other songs on the album a little more personally.
