Back in the day, when Fela Kuti invented Afrobeat—and yes, unlike practically every other music to emerge in the 20th century, Afrobeat was indeed the creation of one person—the music served two functions: to champion the rights and aspirations of post-colonial Black Africans, particularly those at the bottom of the pyramid, and to provide a soundtrack enabling any and everyone to have a good time. #jazz#afrobeat
Happened upon a brilliant record that’s outside my usual field this morning.
Been watching a lot of #Taskmaster lately, so looked on Apple Music to see if the theme tune was on there. It’s not, but there was a track with the same name, so I played it to see if it was a version.
It wasn’t, but it was great, so I listened to it, then cracked into the whole album, which is great.
A bit of new fun music to enliven all your Saturday mornings. If it's not Saturday morning where you are, then go to bed and sleep until it is. Even if that takes most of the week. Trust me, sleep is better than whatever else might be happening. Saturday!
In all honesty, I'm writing this on Friday and scheduling it for Saturday morning. Just don't want to confuse things with the jukebox Friday stuff. But it's good Saturday morning music.
Anyway, yes. Music. This is some very entertaining funky Brazilian afrobeat with a smattering of cosmic synths. Really is tremendous fun.
Talking Heads released their 4th album, "Remain In Light"
The first record I ever bought with my own money was 1983’s “Speaking In Tongues”. But I’d hear “Once In A Lifetime” on the radio often so I got it soon after.
It took me years to appreciate how innovative this album is, with its mix of punk, new wave, funk, and African rhythms. Lots of people say this is their best album.
