Truly and honestly, I have a great time here, because you all make it great. You boost, you reply, you encourage, and inspire! It is crazy to me that I get to talk to people from all over the world every day. I get to be friends with people I'll probably never actually get to physically meet. I was born into a pre-internet world, and this still feels a little like a miracle to me.

@aetataureate A lot of these folks live on the margins. No health care access, persevering with illnesses and injuries, and being treated like livestock by their bosses. What’s it hurt to show them the respect of a mask?

It's that time of year again! I know this can be a time of year where we have a lot of complicated feelings, so let's have a little Mastodon Holiday Party, but you can talk, vent, cry, laugh, or really anything you want. So, I'm asking, How are you doing today, for real?

    And just for fun:

@RickiTarr Christmas is one of those days when I’m glad I’m 64 and my daughter is 16. It’s super mellow. She got me a Duff Beer coffee mug. It’s the best! Now she goes off to her mom’s and I can alternate between reading, reply guying, and drinking coffee. Then an epic walk in the <20 degree sun.

I kind of miss when Bond movies were completely ridiculous. There would be some woman named Iva Wetpussy, and she'd not wear bottoms the whole movie with no explanation. But we need to make this more inclusive, so there also needs to be a man named Colin Allbutts that wears chaps the whole time, and an Ace named Ima Notinterested, who actually gets all the work done.

    waiting,
    @waiting@pnw.zone avatar

@RickiTarr Ima is an intriguing character possibility. They presents as attractive, gender mysterious, and witty, but just can’t be bothered with that other layer of “nonsense”. An ace icon.

@RickiTarr Couple folks wearing me out to the boss, their legislators, our sup ct, whoever, about the lazy, stupid people working at a specific courthouse. I invited them to volunteer for a week just date stamping and filing stuff. After two days they gave up. Said they had no idea how the staff kept up and kept going with the insane workload. They apologized.

Could you be in an Open/Poly Relationship?

P.S. This is a place to discuss your own personal opinions about yourself and your choices, or ask earnest questions of others if they wish to answer. If you've come here to preach or degrade other's choices, that is a block from me.

@RickiTarr I am 100% sure I’ve retired from the game, and 85% happy with the decision. My mistakes have left me without faith in my own suitability for romance. Now that I’m on the sidelines, I’m so impressed with how much energy is spent on love and nookie. I just want to “sit here in this bank of sand, and watch the river flow,” as Joe Cocker said.

I legitimately don't understand pride in where you were born or where you live. You had nothing to do with it, and probably your parents didn't either, most people move for economic reasons. At best, I guess, it makes sports more interesting, and at worst, it leads to genocide. If some places seem better than others the reason is usually money, better infrastructure, better schools, which is a whole other rant. Nothing wrong with enjoying the place you are, but feeling superiority about it, is just cringe.

I'm going to open up a discussion about how people actually live with Boundaries. This isn't a place to be judgemental about other people's choices, we all rationalize things, and make the best we can out of difficult circumstances.

Many of you know I care for my mother who is paraplegic, the level of care my husband and I give her is on the high end, it would be incredibly difficult for one person to do everything that would need to be done. This might sound ugly, but my mother was not a good mother, she frantically switched back and forth between helicopter parenting and outright neglect. She also doesn't think she has issues, and would never go to any therapy that wasn't "Christian" or take any kind of medication for mental health. I spent my childhood caring for her, my father and my siblings, and I still care for her. Understandably, people ask why, and it's a hard thing for me to answer. I do try very hard to set Boundaries with her now, but it probably isn't enough all the time, burn out is high for caregivers in the best of situations, and I can't pretend this is that. It feels like most of us compromise on something, especially with family.

So, what are your experiences with this kind of thing? What do you rationalize? What have you learned?
This is more about sharing personal experiences than to preach at people about their choices, so please keep that in mind when you reply.

@RickiTarr Helped my parents get to the other side. I first just kept an eye in their affairs, and it got more intense each year until they died. Had no help from my brother or spouse. It was hard, and I lost a part of myself.

My parents, and maybe your mom, weren’t the greatest. I still think that absent criminal abuse, kids have always taken care of their parents. Duty transcends boundaries. It transcends self. That sucks, but I think it keeps us going. And we’re the better people for it.

Since I'm stuck inside again, tell me a podcast I should listen to.

There can be only one! You get one choice, don't give me a list of 5, I can't do it.

Give me an episode that you think best represents the podcast.

@RickiTarr Hardcore History, the Wrath of Khan series. The podcast features very long (4+ hrs) episodes, but you’ll learn a tremendous amount with each. You know, the usual stuff.

Anyhoo … the consensus seems to be that the sunk cost of accumulating followers on the guano site is too hard to abandon. How else are they going to share their ideas so broadly? That’s the same transactional justification that everyone enamored with their own words uses to stay. I, fwiw, am not at all persuaded.

@RickiTarr One of the greatest things America has ever given to the world is “Black” music. Davis, Coltrane, Parker, etc. are worshipped in France, Japan, and pretty much everywhere else in Earth. Where would we be without Redding, Simone, Pickett, or a hundred others. Give me a tiny break. Anyway, this will always be the most beautiful song ever for me.

@RickiTarr So many novelty coffee cups at the second-hand store. Daughter and I, when she was maybe 4-5, cruised these stores one day to muster a “proper” tea set. What a hodgepodge haul we ended up with, and then we had a fine tea party that afternoon. She’s her own young woman and I’m an old man now, but those cups won’t be going back.

@Alice @LoganFive This is a sneaky angle on wage theft. Doing two jobs temporarily should get you double wages in a logical, rational, merit-based system. 😆 Anyway, now you have a broadly sought after component to your resume, I would think. Good money people are hard to find.
