Psychiatrist all good, he has concluded that my rapid mood shifts a few weeks ago are best explained as mixed affective state (as opposed to something “more pervasive” like personality disorder, a label I would have vigorously rejected). He told me he is leaving, he’s a locum and they’ve filled the permanent post. Yet another new doctor to get to know sigh Ooh, also he’s letting me try melatonin for sleep! No ones ever been willing to prescribe it for me, and you can’t buy it OTC in the UK

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@purplepadma unsolicited tip on the melatonin. At least in the US, the dosing on it is way higher than the body naturally releases every night. So after taking it every day for a week or 2, people find it stops working. If that happens, taking a break and re-starting can be helpful.

The warm fuzziness of a good sleep has worn off and I’m back to anxiety about psychiatrist appointment and the job/PhD situation. Tom is so against me interviewing for jobs, but my friends (including those working in academia) and life coach think I should keep my options wide open. So I think I’ll do the job interview this afternoon, I probably won’t get it anyway and interview experience is always useful. I’ll worry about whether to take it IF it’s offered! I can still say no thank you, right?

@purplepadma I'm sure you've seen me go on and on about my academic experiences here. I hope they didn't dampen your views on your own PhD. So I'll say this: I've been doing research for 19 years in various roles. Research assistant, post-doctoral fellow, clinical research associate, and finished up at associate professor. At the end of the day, what I loved to do was the science. The rest of the shit in academia is what brings people down. And, at least in the US, academia and corporate america have merged into this 2-headed hydra of absolute bullshit.

In contrast, after I "retired" I took a job with a global research institute and I fucking LOVE it. None of the BS I had at my old position. Well, a little. But manageable. People I've worked with in the past have left academia for industry or other jobs and also say it's a lot better on the other side. I would absolutely do the interview. Like you said, you can always turn it down. I realize you don't have a lot of time to decide on the PhD, which is super stressful. But you can pursue your passions for research without it.

Would you rather be alone in a Space Ship with Darth Vader or the Queen Alien from Alien?

Please support the your answer if you feel like it.

tayfonay,
@tayfonay@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr rumor has it that the scene where the baby alien bursts out of John Hurt's stomach was based on the director's experience with Crohn's disease pain. Well, I have Crohn's disease so I might as well go with the Queen because hey, been there done that. And I don't want to listen to Darth go on and on about the dark side.

Today's conviction of Trump won’t end the legal case, which could quickly be appealed and possibly rise to the level of the US Supreme Court.
It's a historic conviction, no doubt.
But practically speaking, the verdict means only that Trump can't possess a firearm – like all other felons.
A felony conviction won’t keep him from running or serving as president.
A law professor explains a few other key points:

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.
