Another headline that — metaphorically or factually — could and maybe should replace a long-running series of attention-robbing "important news" articles: "R.F.K. Jr. Says Doctors Found a Dead Worm in His Brain" https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/08/us/rfk-jr-brain-health-memory-loss.html

steven_vlad,

@MarcAbrahams You just can't make this shit up. And NYT posted everything every credulously without a bit of skepticism. Worm in brain. Chelation for very high levels of ??. Titanium chip in his vocal cords.

It stands as the crowning achievement of Western classical music.

200 years ago today, Beethoven premiered his instantly beloved Symphony No. 9 in D minor.

Widely praised as a groundbreaking composition, the symphony has and continues to influence artists across the cultural spectrum, and to spark joy.

steven_vlad,

@TheConversationUS @histodons Dudes. ‘Crowning achievement of Western classical music'?

Only if you look at everything through a romanticism-tinged lens and ignore 500+ years of music before Beethoven and 200 years of music after.

Beethoven 9 is a great piece of music. But it's hardly 'The Best Piece of Music Ever.'

There is loads of wonderful music out there that is equally as important and inspiring.

Education is important. However, a few days of education are not more critical than the health of children. The UK government has launched a campaign to tackle school absenteeism. Their plan? Get more kids sick, spread #COVID19 more widely, and encourage more needless #LongCOVID suffering.

Send your kids to schools with a runny nose, cough and sore throat? Really?

steven_vlad,

@augieray @EllieK It means that the estimates of the individual studies showed a large spread around their mean rather being tightly focused around it. And the larger studies had an extra-large effect on the results because they get more weight (because they’re bigger). So the certainty of the overall estimate is not great.

steven_vlad,

@augieray @EllieK This can happen with observational studies with differing methods as Augie suggests. When there is little to no heterogeneity there is more certainty around the overall estimate.

steven_vlad,

@EllieK @augieray That’s a pretty fair interpretation. It’s probably the best we can do in the real world unless someone does a massive but incredibly well-done observational study. It’s easier with clinical trials.

It's just so frustrating. We were told “we had the tools” to manage #COVID19, and then we promptly set those tools aside. The tools include vaccines (but less than 20% in the US have the new booster). The result?

“People's antibody levels against Covid are probably as low now as they have been since the vaccine was first introduced. Now, because antibodies are lower, a higher dose [of the virus] is getting through and causing a more severe bout of disease.”

Hubby has an eye appointment and I am the designated driver. A man checking in is coughing violently.
Medical professional: “Have you been sick lately?”
Man: “Nnn (cough-cough-cough) oo.”
(Honestly, who does he think he’s fooling?)

Did you know that when you view the replies to a post, you only see the replies known to your server? The rest are hidden 🤯

If you're new to Mastodon (or maybe you've been here a while but haven't dived deeper into the community's design), I wrote up a list of things I wish I had understood when I first joined.

https://maria-antoniak.github.io/2023/07/04/notes-on-mastodon.html

This doubles as a list of things that I think need to change if Mastodon is going to be a Twitter replacement. I'd really like Mastodon to succeed!

Imagine a system of government where the final arbiters of everything are a tiny group of judges with lifetime tenure, and these judges are allowed to take money from people on whose cases they rule.
