Starting to see the ai-generated item descriptions on eBay listings and they're weeeeird. They're like these overly wordy crappy little technical manuals 😂

sourdust,
@sourdust@toot.wales avatar

@jake4480 The usual giveaway is when the first paragraph congratulates you for searching for "Steering wheels for grapefruit"; the next two explain what a grapefruit and a steering wheel are; then three or four lengthy repetitions of the same word salad of synonyms for "grapefruit" and "wheel"; and by the end you still have no idea where to find or how to fit a steering wheel for your grapefruit.

There is actually a product called Comfort Cow. "Meet the Comfort Cow, your softest, most comforting friend. Designed to provide a soothing touch and gentle pressure, this cow offers more than just cuddles—it offers a calming presence. When the world seems too much, snuggle up with the Comfort Cow. Large Enough for Love."

Not a real cow though, alas. 🐄

The "Three Body Problem" on Netflix on it's own is bad, but once you compare it to the book, it's much much worse.

The ONLY really good book to movie adaptation I have ever seen was "Silence of the lambs". It more or less just turned the book into a script. The most accurate adaptation I've seen to this day.

What's YOUR favorite book to movie adaptation? Tell us why!

sourdust,
@sourdust@toot.wales avatar

@Mrfunkedude I like the adaptation of "The Prestige" - it keeps the spirit of the novel but entirely flips the denouement. Perhaps both endings are valid but the movie one feels right on film, whereas the book ending works better in print IMO.

I actually much prefer the "American" definition of Liberal (to mean, more or less, progressive) to the classical/European definition.

I understand the historical context but, especially when one party is calling themselves "Conservatives", it's kind of screwed up for "Liberal" to mean "Conservative" as well

sourdust,
@sourdust@toot.wales avatar

@SirTapTap I also prefer the US meaning, as in "I'm broadly progressive but don't assume I'll turn up to every demo", to the now hopelessly confused EU/UK one. Here in the UK the word (if used at all) simply signifies someone who is not on the extreme fringes... and a belated adoption of the term "neoliberal" (to basically mean "conservative who has stopped even pretending to give a damn") has muddied the waters further.

Amazing to think that this was already a "retro" computer game even when we played it in school in 1984!

I don't think we knew it was THAT old. With contemporary IT generations more likely to be measured in months than years, a 12 YEAR OLD computer game would have felt like communing with the ancestors... 👴

LOVE this TASTY shot from The Fury (1978), the other supernatural horror film Brian De Palma did after megahit Carrie.

A psychic accidently touches the bad guy and witnesses them mistreating someone. The editing, the sound, the 360 pan around the actor ... delicious

Warning contains some fake looking 1970s film blood

people, I have a question. I received a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES-001) and a Super Nintendo (SNS-001, with the SVHC Sound module) last year. They both work ... eventually.

For both of them, it takes a few minutes after they're plugged in and switched on before they'll output a picture. I'm using composite video, since I don't have anything with RF on hand.

sourdust,
@sourdust@toot.wales avatar

@GamesMissed Not an engineer here, just experience: "Warming up" is indeed regularly related to old capacitors. IF that's the issue, it will get slowly worse until they die. If you're up to it yourself, recap - if not, put up with it as long as you can, then pay someone else to do it. :-)

I edited this 1996 ‘Toys R Us’ Super Nintendo ad to have what the current USD prices would be with inflation.

Keeping in mind at this point both the PlayStation and Saturn were out, and the SNES was a 5 year old console.

@Sonikku I've long found it fascinating how we feel genuinely shocked at the "high" prices of retro tech, when in fact the great majority of it is still cheaper than it was when new.

The reason of course is that 20 years ago - when many of us built our collections - it was all practically free. Also, $300 for your main games console is reasonable; for a collectable to put on your shelf with dozens of others... much less so.

This is "Starburst" on #ZXSpectrum - a "Crash" magazine covertape game. A very decent shmup which manages to avoid colour-clash issues for the most part, and plays quite smoothly. Incremental power-ups build quickly and you don't lose them ALL if you die. Have to appreciate a shmup that isn't dead-set on wrecking your life... 🙂

If this was on the front of my magazine in 1991 I'd be pretty chuffed.

@acetog @jaz @rugby The problem is the laws.

It doesn't matter that the ball can't have done anything else. That's not positive proof, which is what is required.

sourdust,
@sourdust@toot.wales avatar

@joshourisman @acetog @jaz @rugby No, I can't. If you can, fair enough. I can see a shot where the arm moves out of the way, the ball has shifted down to ground level, but the low angle means it is "over the horizon". I agree it's difficult to imagine how that can't be grounded, but that's not the question. TMO has to be 100% CERTAIN that it is - no other hand/foot under it, e.g. I can't see how he can be.
