Challenged to live-toot games that I, apparently, should have played decades ago? I dabble in #retrocomputing, #pinball, #3DPrinting, and other stuff as well.

So, that 1 port for the that was going around the game news sites a few days ago? It's really good.

My real score for the day. @eric located a working Apple IIgs and floppy drive, something I've missed since I was a kid. He's been holding on to it for ages until we had the chance to meet up and make the trade.

I managed to find a different seller with a bin full of ADB mice, hopefully also working!

I visited the MIT Flea today! A great selection of vintage '70s and '80s computers this time. I saw people happily boxing up VIC-20s and TRS-80s to take home. This is going to be a thread of some of what I saw, followed by what I ended up with myself.

This was a tiny, beautiful little terminal. I think the screen was only 8 or 10 inches diagonal, and the keyboard was similarly compact.

I don't know what this is, but it was beautiful. I considered buying it just for that alone.

Two Compaq luggables. I really like the orange shade on the keys of the visible keyboard.

A tower of Wang chassis, and a monitor. I thought these were computers, but looking at them now, are these just extensions boxes to house the floppy drives? There's nothing visible on any of them aside from the drives themselves.

I'd never seen a Honeywell computer in person before.

I am enough of a nerd that I got excited the moment I saw this. I'd never seen a Pocket Disk before, either! This feels like something I should tag in @foone, since I believe they have a disk medium collection?

A photograph of a Sharp CE-1600P, a docking station for the Sharp PC-1600 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharp_PC-1600) that contained a color plotter (not a printer!), a cassette interface, and the floppy drive from the previous photo.

Because apparently I want to infuriate and frustrate myself and curse the creator of Breakout again, I am once again playing Wizorb

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I love everything about WizOrb, except its difficulty. I either need to properly tune my controls for it, or build/obtain a real paddle.

I have begun to take my 3DS with me for my walks. Not just to collect playcoins but also in the hope of maybe, just maybe getting a streetpass. Chances are slim, granted. Very few people these days still use their 3DSes... and even less people put the wifi on. However, I am missing a single puzzle piece and I really want to get that one!

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

@weebdeluxe I was recently selling at a flea market, and on a whim I wrote out "3DS STREETPASS HERE!" on a piece of printer paper and taped it up above my tables.

I had people photographing the sign, messaging friends about it, and pulling their 2DS or 3DS out of bags in order to turn on the WiFi. Got 5 new StreetPasses that day.

I think a lot of people still have their devices, they just need a reminder.

Back in December, @hbgameclub held a #SHMUP competition, and I was introduced to Dangan GB2 (https://snorpung.itch.io/dangan-gb2). If you're not familiar, it's a bullet hell boss rush SHMUP for the Game Boy Color.

No, wait, come back! It's good!

It's good, and it's also hard. Deliberately so -- if you want an addictive challenge, it's a great choice. The boss design is awesome. Well, as far as I know they're all awesome ... I've only ever gotten to the third stage.

I spotted this on the curb late yesterday evening while driving home. Even driving in the dark and from the opposite side of the street, I could see that this was a massive, high-end display.

I remember using a Flightstick Pro for the family Mac Performa in the mid 1990s. My dad had the Chuck Yeager flight simulator (which was pretty cool at the time), and that was the game he had gotten the stick for.

But I mostly used it for REBEL ASSAULT. 😍

@jake4480 I have a USB Flightstick Pro that's been collecting dust on a shelf for years now. I decided it should be making someone else happy, so I'm hoping to sell it cheap at a flea market this coming Sunday.

I did make sure it works first, of course. Every button and axis tests perfectly. They're built to last.

@gamingonlinux I'm always fine with a game release being pushed back because it needs more work. If a developer can afford the delay, it's the best way to handle it.

I'm going to be selling for the first time at the #MITFlea on April 21st. I am clearing out a lot of hardware that has been taking up a back corner for too long. Most of it even works! A lot of it is relatively modern and working (i.e., you can install at least Windows 10, or any modern flavor of Linux), some of it is leaning retro: working 3.5" drives, an original Macintosh carrying case, and this Intellimouse that I pulled out of a box today.

#newenglandvintagecomputing

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

Still working after being stored for a few decades! I'm loathe to call an optical USB mouse "retro," but on the other hand, this thing is old enough to vote and is a candidate for retrobriting. I think it qualifies.

If you're going to be around on the 21st, feel free to stop by and say hi.

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

Also pulled out of that box was the Myth: the Total Codex on CD. Myth is still my favorite of everything #Bungie has ever done. Really, it's this and #Homeworld are the only RTS series I've loved. I think I'll be keeping this one.

If you're not familiar, Project Magma (https://www.projectmagma.net) keeps Myth updated for modern online play.

Whats is this ? Can't find it on the net.

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

@deepentertains It's not a specific device, it's more of an umbrella term coined by @ifixcoinops to describe small, portable gaming-only devices: an old Game Boy, any of the new crop of handheld emulators such as the Miyoo Mini, or in my case a Nintendo 3DS.

Reviews for Pocket Music and Column Crown on Game Boy Advance from NGC Magazine 65 - March 2002 (UK)

Look, I try to give people the benefit of the doubt as much as I can and try to look for positives most of the time, but I can't sugarcoat this one.
This Columns Crown review is complete and utter garbage from start to finish.

The game is an absolute classic. Highly recommended.

@pretendo@pretendo.network avatar

Today we say goodbye to Nintendo Network. As of writing this message, Nintendo has shut down their online infrastructure for the Wii U and 3DS after 12 strong years. We know many of you here have fond memories from this generation, playing iconic titles such as Mario Kart 7, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, and more. Today marks an end of a chapter in gamings history, and I'm sure many of you wondered why we have stayed so silent for most of the day.

Despite this chapter ending for Nintendo, it's just getting started for Pretendo! We won't be going anywhere, and we have many more plans for the future (such as expanding our infrastructure to allow for 3rd party servers, to allow games not under our scope of support to be brought back seamlessly through other teams). We will remain hard at work improving our servers, both in terms of over compatibility with more games and improving the performance of said games as well.

Before we get into the main part of the announcement, I would just like to extend one last, giant, thank you to everyone who helped support us recently! The amount of network dumps we obtained is outstanding, getting data for nearly all games! This will be such a valuable resource for us moving forward, as we no longer have a way to see these servers in action. These network dumps are invaluable to life of Pretendo, and we couldn't have done it without you all :purple_heart:.

With that, we have 2 big things to announce:

Patch updates

A new release of both Nimbus and Inkay has been released! You MUST install these new releases moving forward, as they contain critical updates required to keep multiplayer match making working! Download the latest versions here:

Hackless Wii U Connections

Today we are finally announcing our private hackless Wii U connection method; SSSL! This new connection method exploits a bug in the Wii U SSL module introduced in firmware version 5.5.5 which allows us to support Wii U users WITHOUT HOMEBREW, using only a DNS change! For information on the setup and limitations of SSSL (as well as other updates regarding Pretendo moving forward), see our full blog post and updated Wii U guide:

PLEASE BARE WITH US AS WE HANDLE THE LARGE INFLUX OF NEW USERS. OUR SERVERS MAY BE UNSTABLE FOR A WHILE AS WE SORT THINGS OUT

GamesMissed,
@GamesMissed@mastodon.social avatar

@pretendo I read through the blog post, and was surprised and pleased by the very end:

"As of April 7th, the day before the shutdown, Pretendo has collaborated with the developers of Colors! 3D, a drawing and art sharing game for the Nintendo 3DS. Together we have officially added support for each other, meaning Colors! 3D will continue to operate as normal when using Pretendo Network. Checkout their game, and their Discord server, for more information on the Colors! franchise!"
