And it's only taken me 14 years since we moved here to get this sorted...

If I really want to, I can run cables over from / 2, , . But I don't really fancy those games on a 14" screen!

Five different versions of Imagic's "Demon Attack" (1982) playing on original hardware.

L-R: , , , ,

INTV has hands-down the best gameplay content. It's a toss-up between A26 and VIC as to which is the prettiest. The A8 version is - disappointingly - barely distinguishable from the A26.

The later C64 version is pretty poor. It's missing nearly all of the visual charm of earlier versions, especially the VIC one.

I was a big fan of in the arcade, but coming as late as 1987 meant this port entirely passed me by at the time.

A shame, as it turns out it's pretty good. It would be an understatement to say that the Speccie's record with arcade ports was not exactly a litany of triumph, so this stands out as very playable and - crucially - RECOGNIZABLE analog of the original experience.

#TurnsOutImStillCrapAt "Cannon Fodder" - #SNES

Although perhaps getting less crap, since a friend @yesterzine let me in on the little secret that this version works with a mouse. After five minutes of rummaging, I was in business.

Note the "surfboard" thigh-mounted mousemat, comfortably pushing the SNES itself into second place on the "Most #90s Thing In This Photo" hiscore table.

This is "Starburst" on - a "Crash" magazine covertape game. A very decent shmup which manages to avoid colour-clash issues for the most part, and plays quite smoothly. Incremental power-ups build quickly and you don't lose them ALL if you die. Have to appreciate a shmup that isn't dead-set on wrecking your life... 🙂

If this was on the front of my magazine in 1991 I'd be pretty chuffed.

Another recent acquisition, "Wanted" on #Sega #MasterSystem. Needs a "Light Phaser" gun peripheral, and a CRT of course; and in my case, the screen brightness maxed out uncomfortably in order to work.

The game? Not the best lightgun game on the platform, far from the worst. Shooty bang bang funz.

"Galaxian" on #Atari XL.

Atari 8-bit has a rep for faithful arcade conversions, and also for them being generally easier than both the originals, and most contemporary ports.

This one bucks that trend both ways. In terms of accuracy it's disappointing; the sprite movement is far too different (and erratic) for the game to "feel" like the arcade version. But this also makes it harder - you don't die any faster, but it's much harder to hit anything!

The "Three Body Problem" on Netflix on it's own is bad, but once you compare it to the book, it's much much worse.

The ONLY really good book to movie adaptation I have ever seen was "Silence of the lambs". It more or less just turned the book into a script. The most accurate adaptation I've seen to this day.

@Mrfunkedude I like the adaptation of "The Prestige" - it keeps the spirit of the novel but entirely flips the denouement. Perhaps both endings are valid but the movie one feels right on film, whereas the book ending works better in print IMO.
