Nothing sums up our weird world of the future more succinctly, than "So what did we all think?" retrospectives of a TV series that launched 24 hours ago.
Amazing to think that this was already a "retro" computer game even when we played it in school in 1984!
I don't think we knew it was THAT old. With contemporary IT generations more likely to be measured in months than years, a 12 YEAR OLD computer game would have felt like communing with the ancestors... 👴
@sourdust went thru so many reams of green&white tractor feed paper playing this on Data General Eclipse AOS via DECwriter II back in jr high and high school. But this game got eclipsed by Trek73...
This is "Starburst" on #ZXSpectrum - a "Crash" magazine covertape game. A very decent shmup which manages to avoid colour-clash issues for the most part, and plays quite smoothly. Incremental power-ups build quickly and you don't lose them ALL if you die. Have to appreciate a shmup that isn't dead-set on wrecking your life... 🙂
If this was on the front of my magazine in 1991 I'd be pretty chuffed.
"Complete set of commercially-released #Atari7800#lightgun games" is perhaps one of the most underwhelming #RetroGaming collection achievements possible...
@sourdust The NES zapper likely was but when I used it I was too young to notice or care 😆
This is slightly off-topic but do you have any favorite 7800 games? I think it's an interesting system and I wish it had more of a chance to shine back in the day
INTV has hands-down the best gameplay content. It's a toss-up between A26 and VIC as to which is the prettiest. The A8 version is - disappointingly - barely distinguishable from the A26.
The later C64 version is pretty poor. It's missing nearly all of the visual charm of earlier versions, especially the VIC one.
@jake4480 I don't own the original cart, this is part of "Spin Cart II" - a modern compilation cart featuring games hacked to work with an #Atari driving controller. The trick works better on some games than others. This one's pretty good.
I was a big fan of #Gauntlet in the arcade, but coming as late as 1987 meant this #ZXSpectrum port entirely passed me by at the time.
A shame, as it turns out it's pretty good. It would be an understatement to say that the Speccie's record with arcade ports was not exactly a litany of triumph, so this stands out as very playable and - crucially - RECOGNIZABLE analog of the original experience.
@jake4480 Our student union had to remove their Gauntlet machine, because a team of players (I wasn't one, but they were friends of mine) got so good at it that they could turn a profit on the health mechanic, and thus play all day for one coin each..! 😃
@sourdust that is SO true haha - I have the micros in my kid's room right now. Thought he'd play em. Nah. haha. The PS1 one actually snuck out to the living room with the Wii, PS2, handhelds, and Series X. But the ones in the game (toy) room are SNES, GameCube, another Wii, Colecovision, N64, and a Retro Trio for Genesis and NES haha. And a Switch and Wii U in the bedroom. Insanity 😂
