#Retrogaming people, I have a question. I received a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES-001) and a Super Nintendo (SNS-001, with the SVHC Sound module) last year. They both work ... eventually.

For both of them, it takes a few minutes after they're plugged in and switched on before they'll output a picture. I'm using composite video, since I don't have anything with RF on hand.

Once they're displaying a picture, the NES looks fine, but the SNES picture has glitches and isn't terribly clean.

I haven't done any work on either of these systems. Both were sitting unused for 20 or 30 years before they made their way to me. Both are using the factory power supplies that they came with.

Is this a matter where they might benefit from recapping, or should I be looking elsewhere?

@GamesMissed (disclaimer: I have very limited SNE/NES experience so this is me just shooting the breeze)

Delay sounds pretty weird; does it fade in? Or suddenly appear? Suddenly appearing sounds like the screen isn't happy with the signal, but I guess that doesn't narrow the problem down.

Composite is always going to be a little on the fuzzy side , especially on a modern TV, but glitches are strange. Have you tried cleaning the cart and cable contacts?

@GamesMissed Not an engineer here, just experience: "Warming up" is indeed regularly related to old capacitors. IF that's the issue, it will get slowly worse until they die. If you're up to it yourself, recap - if not, put up with it as long as you can, then pay someone else to do it. :-)

@sourdust I'm up for recapping them. I'm going to start with the NES, I'll post photos and results here.

Thank you.
