I use Mastodon for public scholarship, because that is one of the main benefits I see to public/open social media. It's how I used Twitter and I've definitely benefited from other people using social media this way.

But in my experience, Mastodon is 'splainy AF, which is exhausting. Just this morning, a gentleman decided I would benefit from an explanation of GIGO, FFS.

So, while I never insist on titles, I'm going to include mine in my display name for a while, to see if that helps.

@emilymbender there was a recent discussion about displaying titles here on #Mastodon. I waded in saying title display is sometimes necessary to signal intellectual capital, the efforts to gain it, and ward off flippant and insincere engagement.

So keep that title on display.

Your work and that of your peers (eg @timnitGebru & co.) is crucial.

If relevant, please feel free to share this #Mastodon account of mine with others on other platforms. I have no time, energy or much interest in setting up accounts on other platforms, but I am an academic, so I do miss the affordances of the bird that was - it was v. good to me during my #PhD years.

As an #ECR, I still look for cognate academic communities, but have few resources to spread myself across #SocialMedia platforms.

@ninokadic @jsdodge @nhandastya @landwehr_c @academicchatter Interesting thread - I keep my title for many reasons, none of which are about being pretentious. They include: 1. avoiding trolling. Social media elicits all kinds of attention, and I find my title signals I am only interested in informed, well-intentioned debate; 2. Spite. I earned my #PhD in a sector that didn't value it, so keeping it public, signals the cultural capital others discouraged & the opportunities it afforded me.

In this kind of spam, are the brand-name companies usually complicit? Or usually not?

Are the spammers trying to make actual sales or just get me to click for some other purpose, like surveillance or malware?

Could those with knowledge of LLMs share references/thoughts/sources about #WaterMarking (ie the embedding of a signal/pattern to flag non-human text/tokens)?

This - https://arxiv.org/pdf/2301.10226.pdf - is helping me understand but I have basic questions, eg.:

  • who creates & embeds the watermark?
  • Can a teacher do it?
  • Would the watermark work on all LLMs (inc. commercial)?
