I can't believe UT2K4 is 20 years old. It was a great game, helped me on my journey into professional game dev, and ran great on Linux (I even set it's demo loop as my root window in Enlightenment 16 once!).

It's too bad Epic basically ignores Linux with Fortnight though.

Here's what my Vulkan engine can do after 1 month of development:

  • Compute skinning + skeletal animation
  • Basic PBR - normal map, metallic/roughness and emissive
  • MSAA
  • Bindless textures
  • Directional, point and spot lights
  • CSM
  • Text drawing with UTF-8 support
  • Sprites

I should stop making graphical games and just shift to only making ncurses based games for Linux terminals. Reject graphical user interfaces.

Custom game engines are not as rare as you might think. Here's a breakdown from @raysan5 (creator of Raylib)

I really think Starfield needs to get on the level that games were at in 1984 and up their number of planets to 2048 to match BBC B Elite.

Old pixel games really look so much nicer when you play on a CRT TV as intended. Nice and smooth.
Here’s True Lies (Sega Mega Drive) on a CRT vs emulator on LCD screen.

Health check for broad reach on bsky vs masto (and I guess I'll check Threads too but expect it to get buried)

If I ask nicely for folks to boost this post, how far does it go?

For anyone curious why I hate wayland API so much: count words like "fairly broadly", "nearly all compositors" etc. Each "fairly" means - you need a special case in your code to make any app work nicely in any environment.

I want a desktop server that can ALWAYS create a bare minimum window and give you some user input. WinAPI satisfy this requirement.

And it would be cool if it would allow a window manager to make this window look cool. X11 satisfy this requirement.

They both prophesy doom about software in the hands of "hobbyists" and hackers and complain about them not paying for widely used software. Culturally, Red Hat has in many ways become the thing it used to very loudly rebel against.

For Vision Pro to succeed, Apple needs to make wearing a headset seem normal

Opinion: Apple normalized AirPods and smartwatches. Can it normalize headsets?

I’m sure an apple headset will be very impressive, cost 6k, and if you try to make something for it they’ll deprecate the dev stack and replace it with something new with no backwards compatibility the day before you release. Also it will explode after three years.

The media is pronouncing the death of the .

I don't think it is dead. Anyone who's ever played an open world RPG with a VR headset can tell you that it's very alive.

But Meta's idea that we'd all be plugging into VR to do virtual meetings? I don't see that happening for a long, long time.

That's not to say it's "dead" -- just not feasible for now.

"The Metaverse" was always just a marketing term from Facebook.

    VR isn't dead.

But that stupid word for it hopefully will die.

I really want Mastodon to be the next big thing, but it frankly has a culture problem that is going to kill its broader adoption. After quite a long time here, and a few days at Bluesky, the comparative experience looks like this:

Bluesky: "Everyone's posting about the latest weird inside joke, and I'm excited to post my weird twist on it!"

Mastodon: "Jokes offend me because I was born without a sense of humor. I demand that you wrap all levity in a content warning or I will FediBlock you."

    tob,
    @tob@hachyderm.io avatar

@arossp Yeah, you've pretty much summed up exactly what's wrong with algorithmic social media.

Mastodon is already a big success. But it's not ever going to be the place where everyone repeats the same dumb joke over and over again in a quest for cheap & easy clout.

    There's no clout on here.

Instead, we're making the same joke over and over again because we can't stop laughing about it, and we don't care if no one else thinks it's funny.
