It's crazy when I see my co-workers who can't touch-type. Like, did I also used to be that slow?

Learning to touch-type is probably one of the best choices I've ever made. It only took like two weeks to learn (plus about a month to get used to it).

It's also just so fun and satisfying. Clickity-clackity :meowbongo:

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@dopey_kun posts like this remind me that not everyone is a proficient typist and that is such a foreign concept to my personal experience. I started playing Mario Teaches Typing when I was no older than 11yo back in the 90s, and when my classmates were in typing class I was given a newspaper to transcribe instead as practice.

I have no meaningful memories of struggling to type. My wife is still flabbergasted when I take apart, clean, and put back all the keys on my keyboard without any kind of reference image.

I definitely take it for granted and forget to give others the mental space to type things that would be a breeze for me.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@dopey_kun yyyeeeah I will admit to kicking someone out of a chair so I could do the typing on a few occasions :anyapeek:

I typically clean my gaming PC components 2-3 times a year. That's the only reason I take my keyboard apart heh

I just noticed that I have been on urusai for a little over a year. I really enjoy this instance and the people on it. It has led to my best social media experience ever. Thank you all and thanks to @neatchee for keeping this up!

@weebdeluxe I'm so happy to hear this <3 Truly, this makes me smile :) My hope has always been that this can be a positive, welcoming home for people who don't feel comfortable, safe, or at-home in many of the other places where folks with our interests gather. To hear that it has fostered a positive experience for folks is just awesome ^_^

I caved and ordered new again. Not thrilled about it. I kind of hate buying new stuff but wearing every day is excruciating on the ears. I can't handle it anymore.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@askDNA I switched to IEMs for my everyday use a long time ago and have never regretted it. Noise isolation is significantly healthier for your ears than noise cancellation, and with either Comply brand foam tips or custom molded ones I can wear them for several hours at a time without issue.

neatchee, (edited )
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@askDNA the tech certainly works, the downside is increased air pressure: it's playing a phase inverted audio wave to what the mics pick up

I'm a pseudo-musician in that I sang a capella for a long time, was in theater, and recorded stuff with friends at home studios. So I'm probably in that class of people you're familiar with haha

I definitely swear by them though! I don't even have crazy expensive ones - though I often consider it - just normal expensive ones lol. I rock the Shure SE215 with their wireless adapter (Shure Aoniq TW2) but I've used many different kinds over the years that I liked

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@askDNA I will also take this moment to stan for a project called "AutoEQ". It's a public repository of frequency response data about every pair of headphones you can imagine that is then used to create EQ presets that counter any offset from "studio flat" output. Long story short, it makes any headphones output audio as close to the same bass/mid/treble balance as possible to what the audio engineers who created the music intended, removing any differences from the specific device.

On Windows it's implemented using software called EqualizerAPO + HeSuVi. On Android you would use the app Wavelet. Not sure if it's possible on iOS

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@askDNA let me know what you think once you've tried it out. I find it makes music a lot more clear, with each instrument easier to distinguish, among other things. Always interested to see if others feel it makes a big difference or not

casual reminder that video games & real world politics do not mix and should not mix

i cannot believe this needs to be fucking said. keep politics out of video games.

i don't care who's side you're on politically. we're here to have fun. not to flaunt our dicks all willy-nilly about who we think is right or wrong.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@huuishuu this is a super shitty take, IMO. Just like most things, there are well executed and poorly executed examples. But demanding that you not be exposed to things that make you uncomfortable is not cool. It is a position of extreme privilege when you can say "how dare you interrupt my fun with your message".

Oh, and let me just point out: politics in games has been around forever. What exactly do you think Final Fantasy 7 is about? Or BioShock? Or Metal Gear? Or Fallout? Or Beyond Good & Evil?

Hell, even game like Halo have political messages sewn into their fabric.

If you missed that, that's a you problem.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@huuishuu cool story. Still shitty. It's never okay to demand others withhold their political message for your own comfort. If you have a problem with the message, you are free to ignore the content. Nobody is forcing you to participate.

From a human behavior analysis standpoint, this image is absolutely fascinating. There is so much information about human behavior that can be extracted from the data represented here

EDIT: OMFG 1701 IS THE DESIGNATION OF THE STAR SHIP ENTERPRISE (NCC-1701). TREKKIES WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!? :zerotwoevillaugh:

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yours_truly the black pixels simply indicate the most rare combinations. It's a little misleading because the scale goes something like 90th through 97th percentile: dark orange, 98th percentile: grey, 99th percentile: black. So while a bright yellow or white pixel next to an orange pixel carries meaning - here's a unique value that holds some significance to humans - a black pixel next to an orange pixel isn't very meaningful. It's usually just going to be the statistically rarest value along rare values, like a min/max function.

(1/2)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yours_truly Now, if you can find a black inside an island of white/yellow pixels, THAT would be interesting. It would probably correlate to values tied to superstitions.

And upon consideration, I wouldn't be surprised if there are at least a few black pixels of that nature

(2/2)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@yours_truly 8068 having zero records is interesting but feels like an anomaly in the data, or a recording error?

Though maybe it's some kind of uncanny valley? Something like: it's just close enough to looking non-random that people looking for arbitrary values avoid it, while also being just barely arbitrary enough to never catch the attention of people who prefer patterns.

Pure speculation. Looking at the raw data where it suddenly jumps from a steady decrease in frequency down to zero for just the last value, I get the feeling it's just an error in the data.

Or maybe it's the author's debit pin that they "removed" from the data lol

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@dean sorry, to be clear, I am still 100% in favor of reducing data collection. I'm specifically talking about anonymity. I've given up on being unidentifiable, not on minimizing the amount of data that can be collected

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@dean yeah I'm familiar. I just think it's a losing battle anyway and I'd rather cut my losses. ML is too good. The benefits of a well defined, robust Real ID system are enough for me to want that over the continued struggle for anonymity

Folks, I present to you the "rule-of-law" Democrat. Biden must win even if it takes tens of thousands of deaths abroad and cracking the skulls and silencing of student protestors at home. All in the name of saving democracy.

@matt5sean3 I am 100% in agreement. THIS is an attitude I can get behind. Get him in office, hope it's by the skin of his teeth, and then put a guillotine on the sidewalk at 1600 PA Ave with a long list of grievances :char_flame:

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@matt5sean3 the other thing I've been considering is that if we get Biden elected, he's done after that. And then who do they run next? Harris? Buttigieg? There's no establishment presumptive nominee after Biden, IMO, so it's a good opportunity to move things further left with a compelling progressive candidate

Took my Note 9 out of the drawer after two months. Wanted to update the apps and get some nostalgic feel again. The battery was at 75% still and not drained like my old iPhones.

I miss this phone. I disabled all Google services and only installed open source apps. Many samsung apps are disabled or in a folder not being used.

There are no OS updates but I don't install much apps. The screen is still beautiful on this phone too.
