@yours_truly the black pixels simply indicate the most rare combinations. It's a little misleading because the scale goes something like 90th through 97th percentile: dark orange, 98th percentile: grey, 99th percentile: black. So while a bright yellow or white pixel next to an orange pixel carries meaning - here's a unique value that holds some significance to humans - a black pixel next to an orange pixel isn't very meaningful. It's usually just going to be the statistically rarest value along rare values, like a min/max function.

@yours_truly Now, if you can find a black inside an island of white/yellow pixels, THAT would be interesting. It would probably correlate to values tied to superstitions.

And upon consideration, I wouldn't be surprised if there are at least a few black pixels of that nature

Though maybe it's some kind of uncanny valley? Something like: it's just close enough to looking non-random that people looking for arbitrary values avoid it, while also being just barely arbitrary enough to never catch the attention of people who prefer patterns.

Pure speculation. Looking at the raw data where it suddenly jumps from a steady decrease in frequency down to zero for just the last value, I get the feeling it's just an error in the data.

Or maybe it's the author's debit pin that they "removed" from the data lol

Like, on the one hand, fuck Biden and I will say it until I'm blue in the face.

On the other hand, I can't say anything if it's illegal to criticize the government because fascists have shredded the first amendment and elections are no more.

It's really easy to say "let it burn" when you're not the one who will be first at the stake. I bet there are a lot of trans people who would tell you to stfu and vote for Biden because if Trump wins they'll be dead AND Israel will be armed to the teeth even more than they already are.

@matt5sean3 fair enough. I was definitely speaking more to the general issue than this specific case :)

And I'm definitely never opposed to criticizing Biden for his behavior. I just find it eminently important to make sure that we're not doing so in a way that leads to another Trump presidency by discouraging voting. No matter how bad Biden is, Trump will be measurably worse, and I do not believe in sacrificing the safety and well-being of some for the sake of standing on the moral high ground

@matt5sean3 oh yeah 100%, it's never a good Idea to browbeat someone you actually want to win over. Always a losing strategy. Even if you don't respect the opinion itself you should always respect the person and their right to have an opinion, however they got there. Ideally you can hold a conversation.

Though, I do know there are unfortunately a lot of our fellow progressives who are very absolutist about certain things like their vote. It really stinks watching people actively try to tear down their potential allies.

If there's one thing you can say about the right, they know how to fall in line and act as one when it's time

@matt5sean3 IMO that is an ideal to be pursued, not an absolute to be required. Because as I said before, if the republic falls apart and fascists take over while we're trying to figure out how to get everyone to agree then it's all for naught.

That's the thing that I'm most scared of right now: that enough privileged, insulated (mostly white) people would rather sacrifice lives (not their own, of course) in a bloody civil war than vote for Biden. It really upsets me when my friends here in Seattle try to convince people in Ohio not to vote for Biden. Like, yeah, it's easy to stand on principle when it's not your rights and life at risk.

I've seen people say "I'm trans and I won't vote for Biden even if it means Trump makes my life worse" and it's like fuck you Stacy you live in Seattle, you've already had your transition surgery, and you have thousands of trans allies in your neighborhood to support you. The teenager in Ohio just figuring shit out doesn't! Are you gonna go rescue him, Stacy? I thought not.

I don't begrudge those individuals their choice to abstain, certainly. I'm just not naive enough to think that things would play out any differently if Biden spoke out against the police behavior, let alone that things would be better under Trump. And let's be real clear: it's Biden or Trump. Is that bullshit? Yes. But it's not getting fixed before this election and if Biden loses that's the ballgame, it never gets fixed.

@matt5sean3 I understand your position. I understand individuals who don't vote. I don't understand progressives who actively try to discourage others from voting for Biden or who shame people who do.

Again, Biden fucking sucks. I think he's a terrible candidate and a terrible leader for a variety of reasons. But he's done infinitely more good - real, measurable good - than any GOP candidate will ever do. The moment he wins I will be calling for drastic change and talking MAD shit about him. Hell, I'll talk mad shit about him right now. But I'll also loudly proclaim "I'm voting for him anyway and I think you should too"

@matt5sean3 are you familiar with Project 2025? Have you looked at exactly what they're planning to do? With the Supreme Court as it is, if Trump wins and they move forward with 2025, that's it. That's the end. They will dismantle so much of the existing apparatus that it will be impossible to rebuild even if they don't fuck with the election process to the point where it's impossible for Democrats to win a majority.

@matt5sean3 Like, so many people last time said the same shit about Trump winning and it being a wake up call and it wouldn't be so bad. Then he killed millions of people by undoing all our pandemic preparedness. That alone, IMO, is proof enough of how bad it can be. And this time, he has a serious incentive to make sure he never leaves office. I don't think there's a limit to what he'll be willing to do with executive branch powers this time around. He'll order the national guard deployed wherever protests pop up and have anyone refusing the order tried for treason. Because if he doesn't, he's screwed. He can't lose power a 2nd time

You know Netenyahu is in the same boat, right? He has to keep the war going because the moment it stops is the moment he gets in trouble. I promise you that Trump and his team want nothing more right now than for Biden to oppose Israel so he can use it as a cudgel in the election to gain Netenyahu's support. @matt5sean3 let me turn that around on you: couldn't one argue that you're treating the people Trump will harm as acceptable losses in an effort to destroy the two party system?

I think the problem is that there are going to be losses either way. That's the fucked up reality we are in. And we have to balance immediate threats against future goals. I don't know what the right answer is. We're in the midst of a real life trolley problem. I just know Biden wouldn't declare himself dictator even if he could so that seems better? :MonikaShrug:

@matt5sean3 I'm skeptical of that due to the ubiquity of qualified immunity. I think everyone on the ground would know that any attempt to investigate those officers would be mired in federal vs state arguments and it wouldn't actually change their behavior in the present, only if they managed to actually hold people accountable down the line

I'd love for him to say it anyway though because why the fuck not? ACAB and whatnot, and I'm in favor of any effort to resign in police misconduct
