I've set up an alt on an Akkoma instance at @CppGuy . Is it possible to migrate from #Mastodon to #Akkoma in the same way as I can migrate between two Mastodon servers? A Web search has thrown up contradictory answers, and I don't want to end up losing all my followers.

@arisummerland There's a lot of truth here, but I think the author confuses America with the West as a whole. As a Brit, I was struck by the myth that you can achieve anything if you want it badly enough when I started working with Americans twenty years ago. I'd characterise the British pathology as less "visualise your dreams" and more "that's a bit crap, isn't it?" 😄

    @grueproof I found connection frustrating and temperamental until I paired the watch with the phone using the standard Android Bluetooth settings. The Gadgetbridge wiki suggests that some devices should be paired with the phone and some shouldn't; in my N=1 experience, this is one that should.

    Still, locking your account is a good idea. I locked mine a few months after joining Fedi, and I'd have done it earlier if I were female, Black, trans, or otherwise likely to get abuse from morons.

    I can't imagine anyone objecting if it takes a day or two for you to approve follow requests. What are they going to do: ask for their money back? 😄

    @kcarruthers What stops my paying is not the three-figure cost but the fact that protection fades after (IIRC) ten or fifteen years. If I wait a little longer until I'm 65 -- the age the NHS recommends for most people -- then I'll be protected throughout my seventies, when my immune system will be weaker than it is now.

    @CrankyAmy @Jorah Can testify: the disease is much worse than the vaccine -- but it's long Covid, rather than the acute phase, that keeps me masking and distancing when everyone around me has given up. I still take every booster the NHS will give me, not least because it seems to reduce the likelihood of long Covid.

    @luckytran My experience suggests that this is specific to the US. I've just stood in a hundred-metre queue to get my Covid and flu jabs. I don't think I saw a single non-white face there. 😟

    We need to get better at persuading people of colour that vaccines are for them as well as for white people.

    Mind, I only saw one other person in a mask, and she was a nurse. Irony is truly dead. We need to get better at persuading everyone to mask up.
