At one time, Psychonauts was considered a big disaster. It’s since become one of the most beloved 3D platformers of all time, and one of the defining titles of the original Xbox.

It was supposed to be a 1st party Microsoft title. But because it encountered numerous development problems – and Xbox head Ed Fries left the company – Microsoft abandoned it.

But it got a second life from 3rd party publisher Majesco. However, Psychonauts release was met with severe financial disaster and was one of the big reasons Majesco entirely abandoned AAA games.

At the time, people were simply not into 3D platformers. And they certainly had no appetite for something as off the beaten path as Psychonauts.

Psychonauts simply wouldn’t die, though. With word of mouth, more people discovered it, and it’s since become a classic. It’s easy to see why Psychonauts now has its fanbase.

For one thing, developer Double Fine Productions simply wouldn’t let Psychonauts die. They republished it on Xbox 360 and One, PlayStation 3 and 4, Mac, and Linux. And they’ve made sure that the game remains playable on high resolution and wide screen aspect ratios.

This is a case where game preservation has taken something from the dead and given it new life. Even now, you can get Psychonauts on GOG.com, buy it for a mere C$13.59, and have it DRM-free. You can even play it on the Steam Deck.

It’s still good even now. At a time when people were obsessed with shooters, Psychonauts quirkiness ensured it stood out. Sure, back in 2005, you could be a typical meathead asshole shooting non-descript enemies. Or you could wage battles of the mind in Psychonauts.

We all know what people pick back then. But what do people prefer now? Well, look at the reviews on Steam – which currently stand at 96%.

Or better yet, look at the reception that its recent sequel Psychonauts 2 received and we have our answer. People were so hungry for more Psychonauts that it became one of the standout games of 2021.

As for Psychonauts itself, this is a game that I continue to play. It never gets old. There is nothing like it.

@atomicpoet that game had great art and level design. The Spanish black velvet poster world, the paranoid delusional milkman world. Haven't played it in 15 years at least but I remember the game play being pretty satisfying too. Nice to hear it's gotten its due.

I don't think there was anything in particular I didn't love about this book. The characters are absolutely endearing and have a way of making you smile with their cute little quirks. I also really enjoyed seeing Viv open up and forge friendships with others who were generally known to be disliked, or awkward...

@TheCozyCat @bookstodon I remember seeing this pop up as a recommendation from audible and passed it by, but decided to check it out after reading your post. 5 or 6 chapters in now and I'm finding it pretty delightful so far. Viv is very appealing, especially getting all flustered when Tandry shoes up.
Travis Baldree is good at reading his own material too, pleasant and good at character voices.
Thanks for the recommendation :)

When I was a kid I generally thought Douglas Adams was too whimsical to be prophetic. Every single thing given annoying artificial intelligence? A kitchen appliance taking all the compute resources of a small city to answer a question?

I mean, come on. That would never happen. How could it?

Anyway, off to argue with the toaster.

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

@skaeth @bookstodon since I have scant reading time available I have little issue giving up on an unrewarding novel. It only bothers me when I have to start over on a book because life caused me to have to put it down so long that I can't follow the story when I can finally pick it back up.

WHAT FILM MADE YOU GO 'WTF DID I JUST WATCH'?

Off the top of my head:

Mother! definitely. Also Society, The Outwaters, Final Prayer (aka The Borderlands), Dead Alive (aka Brain Dead), Skinamarink, The Human Centipede, Infinity Pool, Antichrist, Hausu, Secretary. And I love them all.

What about you?

Could you be in an Open/Poly Relationship?

P.S. This is a place to discuss your own personal opinions about yourself and your choices, or ask earnest questions of others if they wish to answer. If you've come here to preach or degrade other's choices, that is a block from me.

@RickiTarr my boyfriend and I knew that neither of us were sexually monogamous from the beginning. Hasn't been a problem.

lovecat,
@lovecat@feral.cafe avatar

@RickiTarr to expand a little: it's been a boon for us, actually. We both have sexual needs and desires that the other just isn't the person to fulfill. Not only does a positive attitude toward us finding the fulfillment we need with other people help us avoid simple frustration, it also demonstrates that our relationship isn't fragile; it's not exclusive access to sexual fulfillment that keeps us together, and that makes our partnership in life stronger.
