@sunflower @bookstodon if you like HHGTTG you may like Robert Sheckley's zanier stuff. Mindswap, Crompton Divided and Journey of Joenes come to mind, in descending order as comparable to Hitchhiker's and ascending in terms of coherence.

Anything by Seanan McGuire is a winner but I particularly love her Wayward Children series.

Looking through what I’ve read recently here are a few I enjoyed.

Spear by Nicola Griffith

Even Though I Knew the End by CL Polk

Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison

The Clockwork Empire by Lucas J.W. Johnson

Dating and Dismemberment by A.L. Brody

@gravious "Lesbian Necromancers In Space" sounds like a band name, like "Gaye Bykers on Acid" (yes, they DID exist!). @sunflower @bookstodon

@gravious @sunflower @bookstodon I loved this book sooooo much! Gideon is one of the best characters ever

@gravious @sunflower @bookstodon I was just talking with a friend about this book last week and "lesbian necromancers in space" was EXACTLY how he described it. I admit I tried to read it once before, but I don't think I was in the right frame of mind. My friend convinced me I should make another attempt.

gravious,

@dbsalk @sunflower @bookstodon I love it, so I would recommend giving it another try but I appreciate it may not be everyone's cup of tea

@sunflower @bookstodon For a scifi/mystery I recommend The Mimicking of Known Successes by Malka Older. It's a novella, so a quick read, and features a slowburn sapphic romance.

@sunflower @bookstodon here are some sci-fi and fantasy I really enjoyed this year:
-The Mountain in the Sea by Ray Nayler
-The Once and Future Witches by Alix Harrow
-Sea of Tranquility by Emily St John Mandel
-Kate Daniels urban fantasy/romance series by Ilona Andrews
-Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
My all-time favorite sci-fi series is the Expanse by James SA Corey, but each book is really long and there are nine of them plus a bunch of novellas.

@sunflower If steampunk fits within your likes, I can give you a 3-for-1: Lancaster's Luck trilogy by Anna Butler (starts with The Gilded Scarab) is an ever-favourite m/m romance for me.

Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather - space nuns (some queer) on a living ship. And there's a book 2: Sisters of the Forsaken Stars.

The audiobook is in the Plus catalogue if you're an Audible member.

@sunflower @bookstodon Have you read the Murderbot series by Martha Wells? All Systems Red is first in the series.

I just finished a lovely YA queer coming of age #book with a young trans guy pianist lead - "Always the Almost" by Edward Underhill. Recommended. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/60784592-always-the-almost

@sunflower @bookstodon I would put in three suggestions:

  1. Telepath by Janet Edwards https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/a8ffb5b8-db55-417f-a5e8-470377db83b3

  2. The Green Man's Heir by Juliet E. McKenna https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/35d7dfeb-0bcc-478f-836d-9df8656fd29d

  3. A Pale Light in the Black by K.B. Wagers https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/cb306824-d1f1-4d30-af58-5ccd1c13710e

All three are excellent and have way less recognition than they deserve.

(and of course I recommend Murderbot, but so do everyone else)

"Rebel Dragon" by me. Epic fantasy from a personal viewpoint, also queer (yay).

4.4* across 750+ ratings, 4-book series which is complete 😎

@sunflower @bookstodon if you haven't already read it, I like all of Anne Leckie's SciFi. The first is "Ancillary Justice".

Sci fi, with elements of non human queer (?) romance by the third book.
