Father, husband, some sort of hacker, occasional computer scientist.

I love programming, fonts, computing esoterica, and learning languages (even if I’m not very good at it).

We’ve got darkness yesterday, heavy storms and possible tornadoes today, super locust outbreak things coming up. I’m assuming the river will be as blood sometime this summer and someone let me know if they see a bunch of frogs.

STOP PUTTING MENUS ON APPS

MENUS WERE NOT MEANT TO BE ON YOUR PHONE

Years of QR codes at tables but no real world use found.

Wanted to know what was available at a restaurant to order? We had a word for that: Menus

“Yes please, let me not order if cell service is bad. Let me not order if my phone battery is dead.” - statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.

Me and 9yo jumping on the trampoline in the back yard.

9yo: So in my video game the teams are all different countries but one is the UN. Is that the United Kingdom?

Me: No, the United Nations.

9yo: So is that every country?

fifteen minutes later, still jumping, out of breath

Me: So in 1971, the ROC had been replaced in the UN by the People’s Republic of China, and in 1991 the USSR had ceased to exist, and its Security Council seat went to Russia.

9yo: So anyway in my game…

I couldn’t remember a piece of array syntax so I searched Google.

The first result is some AI spam page. The result provided on it is incorrect; it’s the MySQL answer, though also not quite correct.

The Internet is going to be killed and it will be AI spam that kills it.

Core competencies are something I think about a lot. I love to dig into what makes companies or ecosystems or social groups tick. Especially when that core competency enables what they do:

McDonald's, for example, is a real estate company that happens to make burgers.

Walmart is a shipping logistics company that also sells things.

What other examples can you think of where the core competency of the company is such that the "thing" a company does falls out naturally as a consequence?

GM operates a usurious bank, and incidentally makes cars.

Hot take: like “vt100”, “xterm-256color” means nothing in $TERM anymore. Windows Terminal uses it. macOS Terminal uses it. A bunch of others use it.

Do they support the xterm copy region control sequences? What about the xterm read rect or event region stuff?

Of course not. They support a small subset of xterm’s features, but call themselves xterm. It’s basically impossible to determine if you’re on a real xterm and reliably use its advanced features because of their lies.

Much like how “ANSI” started colloquially meaning “code page 437”, I’m now increasingly seeing “ASCII” mean “plain text of any character set in any encoding.” UTF-8 encoded text containing Unicode code points far from the first 127? Well, if there aren’t emojis, it’s “ASCII”…

To be fair, “ASCII” in technical jargon has often meant “ISO-8859-1” for the sake of expediency but it’s like I keep tellin’ ya, that’s one too many bits.

(Why yes, I am fun at parties.)

Where did everyone go?

lorddimwit,

@Migueldeicaza

As someone who had a four digit Slashdot UID in 1998 (before they migrated all the accounts and renumbered them in…1999 or so?):

I don’t know if it was always weirdly right wing and I was just too young/naive to notice or not but…they got weird. I remembering checking them out for fun in 2016 and they had front page stories espousing Hillary Clinton conspiracy theories.

No more "terminal room" at the #IETF119 meeting, just a room called "shared workspace". (Long gone are the days where it was necessary to have terminals for the attendants. Each one now comes with three of four computers.)

@bortzmeyer

Many, many years ago (1999 or so), I was attending a training on some HP-UX product at one of HP’s offices.

The teacher said “and if you need to check your email, there’s a dumb terminal in the next room.”

I went into the next room fully expecting a glass TTY running like lynx or something. Nope. There was a Windows 98 box or, as she had described it, a dumb terminal.

9yo brought some friends home from school, one of them texted another and then a dad I’d never met showed up with his daughter (whom I’d also never met) and dropped the daughter off to also play.

9yo explained that I work from home catching hackers and also that I have THREE staplers in my office.

I was a little embarrassed/unprepared to meet someone since I was just wearing an old t-shirt and plaid pajama pants but, to be fair I work from home and have three staplers.

Hello everyone!

I have a relative in somewhat desperate need of a new job.

They have decades of experience in customer education, employee training, corporate course design, that sort of thing; as well as HR management experience up to the director level.

They’re fine with in-office in the Houston, TX area or anywhere remote. Relocation isn’t an option unfortunately due to family obligations.

Things are getting pretty tight, so I’d really appreciate a boost. Thank you.

Weird question:

So, one possible nearterm use for AI is as a concierge for purchases, e.g. "find me the best place(s) to buy the following 14 spices online; my budget is 60 dollars" How does this affect advertising? Meaning, part of why advertising works is individual people don't have the time or expertise to do a careful analysis about quality and cost, so brands try to capture attention and then to display quality/desirability.

lorddimwit,
@lorddimwit@mastodon.social avatar

@ZachWeinersmith

Not AI, but this was one of the goals of General Magic and its Telescript language. You’d write an agent in Telescript and it would go run itself on other systems to find what you were looking for, and potentially buy it or book it or whatever.

It was ahead of its time.

> It was relying on the company to bring it an injection of cash along with the resources it needed to stay afloat in today’s insanely competitive robot vacuum market.

This is 100% a passage I would have expected to read in a pulpy #SciFi novel circa 1988.

The future is weird.
