Father, husband, some sort of hacker, occasional computer scientist.

I love programming, fonts, computing esoterica, and learning languages (even if I’m not very good at it).

(He/him, BLM, LGBT+ and reproductive rights are human rights, left==labor, we only have one Earth.)

11yo turns 12 next month and is dying to get a phone. Apparently all his friends have smartphones, which means I am officially a Luddite.

What kind of phone do you get a 12 year old?

In the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Lichtenstein fielded a force of 80 men which saw combat but came back with 81 because they made a friend.

My 18yo nephew asked me what my favorite is and I don’t actually know the answer.

I use #C and for applications. I write for data munging and scripts and small apps. I’ve written many thousands of lines of each. I sponsor .

But is one of them my favorite?

I think my favorite would probably be something like or or or or or or or or or or or or or…

In a pinch, you can get quite a long way towards a meal if you have bread and cheese on hand.

I certainly have never eaten an entire block of manchego as a meal.

Certainly not.

Older Millennials and GenX
have a unique perspective on the before and after world.

We use (and build) them now, but we grew up without IoT, without social media, without "smart" phones. When cameras were big and privacy was some sort of the default.

We have an important responsibility to fight for privacy rights so that younger generations will also know the freedom given by these rights.

We cannot let society
make them think this is normal and that nothing else is possible.

We must fight for for them too ✊🔒

I’ve heard people my age (who would be either the youngest of GenX or the oldest of Millennials) referred to as “The Oregon Trail Generation” and I found that particularly apt.

If you built a macOS desktop app that makes notification sounds even when the machine is in "Do Not Disturb" focus mode you should feel very bad about what you have done

(My laptop made two mysterious ping noises during the online talk I gave this morning)

TIL: lace cards

It’s a computer punch card with every possible spot punched out, so what remains is a flimsy filamentous net of paper that instantly tears and jams up the card reader.

Old-school denial of service attack.

@debcha

Supposedly, though I don’t know how true it is, the reason why #EBCDIC had such a weird layout for symbols was so that you wouldn’t end up with too many adjacent holes when punching cards in common cases.

Again, no idea if it’s true but it’s nice to think there was some method to the madness.

A sign that I like a game is that I want to see the code. So yes, I’m excited.
