I swear, we are still talking about this platform stuff all wrong. There is absolutely no comparison between my mastodon engagements and those anywhere else. People here are just far more interested in engaging people and ideas than any other site where the biggest activity seems to be following celebrity accounts and popular influencers discussing very little. It’s a completely different kind of experience.

@shoq I think most users are mostly interested in being passive consumers of social media. We have generations trained on consuming television/magazines/newspapers without their interaction. I'm not sure that's ever going to change. Then again it's those interested in engaging are the ones who change the world (see my pinned Margaret Mead quote)

My contemporaries would do better to ask how one could stop time traveling rather than searching for ways to start. And even travel into the past is an easy thing-- that surprises you I see!

You have traveled into the past many times, as have I. Time travel is easy. The actual issue is realizing that one has been transported.

@futurebird Thank you so much for this. I've managed to do something similar a few times, except kinda in reverse. I had a life-shifting moment in college and years later it felt like (or I realized?) that maybe, just maybe the little voice in my head in that long ago moment was a future me going back to encourage a younger me. You've now given me another way to anchor these ideas in my head. Again, thank you.

it's interesting to me that along with the search and rescue efforts most posts are mentioning the traffic congestion that will be caused by the Baltimore bridge collapse. Few are saying anything about a large port being closed indefinitely. Any ship in port is now stuck there until debris is removed along with a large disabled container ship. #Baltimore #BridgeCollapse #PortClosed

Personal update for those who are following my house saga:

Our twins and our agent saw the house. We FaceTimed from Oregon. 👎🏻 Big disappointment. We’ll explore more homes when we get to BC. Not expecting to buy anything this trip.

@evan Here in Bali (where I am right now) they do this every year on their New Year's Day - for an entire 24 hours! In addition to turning (or lowering) lights no one leaves home, all businesses are closed, even the international airport is shut down. It's heavenly!

    Doc had good news & bad. The good: left ankle is a severely traumatized tendon from compensating for the boot on right foot, and should heal once the boot is gone. The bad is that it’s one of the slowest healing tendons in the leg and it could take 12 - 26 weeks to completely heal. And no steroids.

    Perhaps to your point, I’ve often noticed that some MAGA women can be substantially meaner and more vicious than many MAGA men. Mom’s for Liberty is a case in point.

    Well here’s a household crisis I’ve never encountered, but did once imagine. A small glass tumbler has slipped into the garbage disposal’s rubber seal and is acting as a permanent stopper. All I can think to do is to break it, and suck out the shards with a Shop-Vac. ugh

    @shoq all the disposals I've ever had had removable rubber seals. Are you sure you can't just lift out the seal with the glass? Also removing that seal for cleaning is essential to keep the disposal stink at bay.

    I’ve heard the argument made with the Palestinians deserve to reclaim their Homeland with an argument that sounded roughly like “because possession is 9/10ths of the law.” But by that standard, it’s been Israeli land since 1948. I don’t mean to sound glib about this. I really am interested in the moral calculuses some use to defend or condemn one position or the other. Sincere replies are welcome. Speeches and agitprop are not.

    This morning, MSNBC made sure to bring us two uncommitteds who said if Biden doesn’t change course by November they’ll vote for Trump. In my head I pictured him holding a gun to his own head and a thought bubble read “Ceasefire now or the useful idiot gets it in November.”

    (Reminder: Hamas has about as much interest in a ceasefire as they do a two-state solution.Which is to say they have none. Zip. Nada.)

    @shoq @lcwebsxoxo Of course MSNBC did that. Bringing on uncommitted voters that will still vote for Biden in Nov. wouldn't give them anything to talk about. MSNBC, like all the newstainment outlets are in the business of playing on peoples emotions, not appealing to their reason, so they can keep eyeballs looking at their ads.
