So, what's the thing, what's the big thing no one can help you with? How do you cope with it?

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@RickiTarr being obscenely financially secure without earning a bit of it and can do little to change it. Deal with it - I hide the fact of it most of the time. I try to practice mindful generosity.

If you've never had the chance to see the Aurora do whatever you can to get out tonight and tomorrow night (maybe Sunday too?) to see it. There are few things on this planet more magical. Find a place away from city lights and open sky and look to the north. Your cameras, either your phone or "regular" cameras will pick up more than your human eyes. But from what I'm seeing of the figures even the naked eye is gonna get to see colors with this storm. #Aurora #NorthernLights

My #Mastodon home timeline is amazing, so much good and relevant stuff, much better than either Twitter or Threads. It’s just there’s too much of it and there’s no way to figure out what’s top.

The other problem, which is also discovery related, is being able to see content break through existing spheres.

Other than that, I think we’re gucci here.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@alper two suggestions to manage the flow. 1)Turn on notifications for particular people you don't want to miss. 2) Use lists

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@lakelady I can’t speak for @galad, but in my view, the evidence is in the fact that 100% of their very public ire and rhetoric is aimed at the US and Israel, rather than the biggest obstacle to ending the violence: Hamas. I have not yet seen a single exception. It may exist, but I haven’t seen it.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@galad @shoq Honestly I've heard VERY little about what various groups have called for other than some very vague reporting of "divesting". The reporting on the student positions by the MSM has been abysmal.

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

See? Same problem as Hamas itself. When people don’t actually want to resolve the conflict, they make demands that can never be met. And that is precisely why so many Israeli hardliners feel justified in doing whatever it takes to destroy Hamas. Even if the death toll sickens some of them. They see it as their only option with an enemy that lets uncomprising terrorists lead them to only more death and destruction.

Some celebrites have really gotten outraged over these senseless deaths in Gaza, which is curious given how many other senseless deaths have surrounded us. Did those tragedies have more sense to them, or could Jews being demonized be a reason for this sudden outbreak of concern? I have questions.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq are you assuming one can only be outraged by one set of deaths at a time? I find most people can hold several outrages at a time.

Whenever someone tells me about their totally “awesome community” on any platform (often one that hasn’t existed very long), I look at their time and all I can figure is that community for them is a few dozen people who like their posts. I guess that’s fine, but it feels like a pretty low bar for “awesome” to me.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq on the other hand a few quality connections are worth way more than thousands of faceless followers

shoq, to random
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

I am getting the sense that if this is encouraged to build any larger, all that will be achieved is a lot of commencements, if not graduations themselves, will be delayed or canceled outright, denying tens of thousands of students that hard-earned once in a lifetime moment.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq hmmm being denied being handed a document most will toss into storage vs children losing their families and their lives. Tough choice?

#alivelshi While many of these protests started out sincerely enough, this has morphed into performative political stunts by a) opportunistic grifters who show up at any fire to throw gasoline on it, and b) foreign adversaries who know how to skillfully enable and program them.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq hmmm that sounds a lot like what was said about anti-war protests in the past . . . the ol' outside agitators line.

There should be a special (often postumous) Darwin Award for people who stand their ground, capturing killer tornados not more than a half mile from their position.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq if you know which way it's headed a half mile can be perfectly safe.
And you can grab great photos/video

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq tornados tended to leapfrog over my hometown so I've been around them quite a bit. Yes they can zigzag and go up and down but if you know the direction of the front and the stormline you have have a general idea which way they're heading. Hell you could be a half-mile behind where it's already been. They rarely backtrack

Imagine a few dozen strategically chosen bridges, shut down, weekly. Coupled with other similar actions, congress would be forced to consider urgent reform measures that would never happen any other way. We’re going to end up there anyway. We should get started.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq that's what seems to have started on Monday - lots of bridges (and an airport too I believe) all shut down in a well co-ordinated effort

lakelady,

@shoq What's an example of an issue that's got enough support to mobilize multiple same day protests that is not polarizing? If we all agreed where's the need for massive protests?

I swear, we are still talking about this platform stuff all wrong. There is absolutely no comparison between my mastodon engagements and those anywhere else. People here are just far more interested in engaging people and ideas than any other site where the biggest activity seems to be following celebrity accounts and popular influencers discussing very little. It’s a completely different kind of experience.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq I think most users are mostly interested in being passive consumers of social media. We have generations trained on consuming television/magazines/newspapers without their interaction. I'm not sure that's ever going to change. Then again it's those interested in engaging are the ones who change the world (see my pinned Margaret Mead quote)

:: There is nothing uncanny or mysterious about time travel. Time travel is trivial. The passing of time is relentless banal even. My contemporaries would do better to ask how one could stop time traveling rather than searching for ways to start. And even travel into the past is an easy thing-- that surprises you I see!

You have traveled into the past many times, as have I. Time travel is easy. The actual issue is realizing that one has been transported.

@futurebird Thank you so much for this. I've managed to do something similar a few times, except kinda in reverse. I had a life-shifting moment in college and years later it felt like (or I realized?) that maybe, just maybe the little voice in my head in that long ago moment was a future me going back to encourage a younger me. You've now given me another way to anchor these ideas in my head. Again, thank you.

it's interesting to me that along with the search and rescue efforts most posts are mentioning the traffic congestion that will be caused by the Baltimore bridge collapse. Few are saying anything about a large port being closed indefinitely. Any ship in port is now stuck there until debris is removed along with a large disabled container ship. #Baltimore #BridgeCollapse #PortClosed
