Imagine a few dozen strategically chosen bridges, shut down, weekly. Coupled with other similar actions, congress would be forced to consider urgent reform measures that would never happen any other way. We’re going to end up there anyway. We should get started.

@shoq that's what seems to have started on Monday - lots of bridges (and an airport too I believe) all shut down in a well co-ordinated effort

@lakelady Where were the others?

@lakelady Glad to see it. I’ve been posting about mass disruptions for 10 years. But it has to be applied to even bigger issues urgent to all of us (like the need for urgent legislative reforms). Single issues like Gaza will never get enough popular support for any kind of critical mass. But their goal is more about attention than far reaching systemic change.

@shoq I'm kinda hoping this was just a start of more. A practice run as it were.

@lakelady It’s too polarizing an issue to gain widespread public support. They run the risk of a backlash.

lakelady,
@lakelady@mstdn.social avatar

@shoq What's an example of an issue that's got enough support to mobilize multiple same day protests that is not polarizing? If we all agreed where's the need for massive protests?

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@lakelady I mean issues that impact us all collectively. The things we should all be mobilizing over. Especially the big 4, which will change everything else:

  • John Lewis Voting Rights Act 2
  • Campaign Finance Reform
  • Repealing Citizens United
  • Media reform (and breakups).

@shoq @lakelady None of them attract enough people though.. Even though Citizens United should... but not enough people really understand what that did to harm them..

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@Tedgarrison3 @lakelady That’s why I consider them a set of reforms that have to be discussed together. All of are related, and are part of story we just haven’t learned to tell yet. But that may change.

@lakelady @shoq
Abortion. Women's bodily autonomy. I'm actually quite amazed the women haven't taken up the pitchforks yet...

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@Tedgarrison3 @lakelady I consider abortion one of those issues that goes away with the other reforms. The lack of those reforms is what keeps everything in this dysfunctional stasis that always favors extremists.

Sadly, most Americans reject aspirational activism as “too extreme.” Our overlords have spent 150 years building that narrative. How convenient for them,
