"The Harvard graduating students denied their degrees over Palestine protest"

"The decision by Harvard to delay degrees for 13 students for one year has caused outrage at the university & a mass walkout from its graduation ceremony.

"Harvard Corporation barred these students from receiving their degrees... on account of their involvement in the three-week pro-Palestine encampment at the university last month."

Fact check gem of the day: On Karl Popper's contribution to neurotransmission

In the early 1950s, neuroscientists were arguing about whether neurons communicate with one another via electricity (sparks) or chemical neurotransmissions (soups). It was known as "The War of the Soups and the Sparks" (Big reveal: It's mostly soups).

The experiment that put the debate to rest (at least for the spinal cord) was performed in 1950 by John Eccles and colleagues. In that experiment, they demonstrated that their own hypothesis (sparks) was wrong.

What inspired them to do a "disproving" experiment as opposed to the type that would gather support for their favorite theory? In 1944, Eccles met Karl Popper, and they began corresponding. Per one historian,

"The association with Popper made Eccles reformulate his experimental questions in accord with Popper’s philosophy that apparent ‘‘authentication” is no proof at all. It is only the clear-cut ‘‘falsification” of a theory that carried intellectual weight."

William Anders, astronaut on the Apollo 8 mission, passed away earlier today.

Anders took the iconic Earthrise photo while orbiting the Moon with Borman and Lovell. No human had ever seen an Earthrise before.

On the transmission he says "Oh my God, look at that picture over there! It's the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty!"

"How Israeli prison doctors assist in the torture of Palestinian detainees"

Israeli doctors:

  • share prisoners’ medical information with interrogators to “greenlight” torture;

  • teach interrogators how to inflict pain without leaving physical marks;

  • actively engage in acts of torture themselves.

Torture is a "colonial tool to subjugate & exercise control over Palestinians & is intertwined with its very inception as a state."

Speaking of bad ideas, WTF Adobe? https://9to5mac.com/2024/06/06/change-to-adobe-terms-amp-conditions/

The Adobe Creative Suite absolutely owns significant portions of professional creative production workflow, some aspects of which have essentially no good quality or interoperable competition. So a lot of people are locked in. "Just don't use Adobe products" isn't an option for many of the people affected by these insanely grabby new terms.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

You can now remotely dump Recall data and screenshots over the internet from Linux etc. Changes in flight for parsing data too.
