#ClimateDiary How to note Sunak’s election announcement here? Getting drenched in rain was symbolic & symptomatic; tragically a man died in a mudslide in Yorkshire the same day.
Will this election be decisive from a climate policy point of view? Labour will be better, but how much exactly I don’t know, given scrapped pledges. Of course i am hopeful for Green party gains. But actual positive excitement and energy, again rallying everyone to make this a #ClimateElection etc? sadly, no. #GE2024
>>Europe is facing overwhelming losses and destruction from climate-related disasters.
"A piecemeal approach is no longer enough. EU’s substantial climate risks require reforming institutions, legal frameworks, across sectors and ministries, planning, fiscal, and sectoral strategies" explains Solene Dengler, a senior climate change adaptation specialist with the World Bank.<<
#ClimateDiary This too is going to get so much worse.
And yes, I am aware of the irony/tragedy/whatever-you-want-to -call -it, that flying contributes to climate change and therefore turbulence. And now pondering whether climate change will in turn soon make flying too dangerous, and that there is a certain justice in that. All this; but for now do feel sorry for people on this flight. #Turbulence#SingaporeFlight
Actually, it'll probably just make the pollution worse.
I would guess that they'd simply fly at a higher altitude to pass over the turbulence. This comes at increased cost/pollution (fuel) and obviously the aircraft's structure will have to go up a notch.
For context, Concorde flew at ~60,000ft and today, most flights are ~30-40,000ft.
Worth emphasizing this, because most news outlets did not:
“Rep. Matt #Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Thursday ominously invoked Donald #Trump’s call to far-right violent extremists while joining the former president at his criminal trial in New York.
“Standing back and standing by, Mr. President,” Gaetz wrote on social media, along with a photo of himself positioned behind Trump at his trial.”
“ the world's oceans have broken temperature records every single day over the past year - BBC analysis finds “
“ ~47 days smashed the record for that day of the year by at least 0.3C (BBC analysis of Copernicus data).
Never before in the satellite era had the margin of record been this big “
" almost a month ahead in the sea surface temperature in the Atlantic “
#ClimateDiary It’s spring and it’s wonderful. So much joy, beauty, abundance, grandeur from nature, just there, in my otherwise mundane neighbourhood. Bluebells feel very early, along with everything else, but i also want to relish and be grateful for all whilst we still have it. #FrugalAbundance#Gratitude
" By the end of the summer, if we're still looking at record breaking temperatures in the North Atlantic or elsewhere, then we really have kind of moved into uncharted territory "
( Gavin Schmidt director of Nasa's Goddard Institute for Space Studies )
Four years on from our first wave, here is a brilliant examination by Prof Anthony Costello of the failures of the UK pandemic response in 2020 - emphasising that we did NOT need hindsight to have responded differently.
I spent much of my childhood on a Scottish isle, with golden sand and a deserted beach at the bottom of the garden. I’ve loved seagulls since.
Stormy days and plunging Gannets. Twilight Oyster Catchers and their evocative call. The grace of Great Black Backed gulls.
Later I flew gliders, inspired by gulls.
I've dreamt that when I die, I could be fed to Fulmars, so my atoms soar the oceans within them
In case anyone’s not too sure.. this is what a 'spring lawn' is supposed to look like.
Breakdown:
• No irritating lawn-mower lines.
• A multitude of flowers.
• Lawn-mower rests, unperturbed in garden shed.
• No Louis X1V - 'rules over nature'.
• No walking up and down for hours, making a really annoying, loud noise and irritating the neighbours.
One of the twists, is that with the recent faster SD cards and with MacBooks that cannot be upgraded after purchase, the SD slot is a really simple, really cheap way to add a lot of extra storage space. You can even use them for Time Machine. No dongles. No sticky-outy bits and you can store them in your wallet.
My discipline, anthropology, is not seen as a “growth" discipline, and departments are being closed down. But the world needs Anthropology and Anthropologists now more than ever!
Here are my 8 reasons for this:
POSSIBILITIES
At a time of polycrisis, when the destructive fallouts of capitalist modernity are ever more apparent, anthropology highlights that there are myriad alternative ways of thinking and living; that there is so much to learn from other peoples in the world. 1/n
So it’s taken him ~35 yrs to understand this??? It’s not even complicated. It’s simply human-nature for the narcissistic money-grubers. Inevitable when they are unrestrained and therefore able to get money, which they can then use (corruptly) to get more.
Pauline, I may not be understanding exactly what you're saying, but the crux on here is that you can follow hashtags. Just click on one and the follow button appears at the top.
Equally, this reminds me of your mention of wanting to see posts in other languages. Likewise, just follow a hashtag in that language, e.g. 'climat'.
Also, you can do as I did when I joined and either pin a post with hashtags, or put them in your bio. Hashtags are the thing.
A power company that has received £6bn in UK green subsidies has kept burning wood from some of the world's most precious forests, the BBC has found.
The way #Drax and others can keep on burning wood because it counts as #RenewableaEnergy is just scandalous. We really must drop the language of #Renewable (a hangover from peak oil worries anyway) and go for #ZeroCarbon energy instead.
I was going to post this article this morning... but got sidetracked.
A couple of points that pricked the senses:
" the government is consulting on plans to extend it to the end of the decade, which could cost bill-payers an additional £4bn "
" Drax helps the UK government meet its climate targets because, on paper .. the power station is treated as emission-free. This is because ... are counted in the country where the trees are felled not where they are burned "
I've been saying this over and over and over again for 30yrs.
Most people have never done this in their lives, but if you have the opportunity...
On a hot summer's day, walk across some fields. Feel the heat and the gusting breeze. Then walk into a forest. Temperature plummets and humidity rises. It's all you need to know.
Indeed... and as you may recall, I've posted a few times about the same phenomenon in W and SW France. They're still smouldering away now, at a gentle ~2000 degrees.
Today in SE Normandy, it's like a lovely late April day. Sunny. Tons of bees in the plum-tree, which is now in full blossom and luckily, the Asian Hornets seem to still be asleep. Ho hum.
