Many years ago there was an art show for kids on UK TV which would show a gallery of viewers pictures while playing Left Bank Two. When I got to a year of dancers I thought I should at least put them to music once, but finding something to fit them all would be impossible, so I thought I'd make a musical gallery with that vibe.

Here it is. A year of Fridays & some easy listening.

As ever, have a good weekend if you possibly can.

A hand drawn animated video. A rainbowappears and disappears on screen with sparkly ends as the title screen reads: Project . Sparkles and rainbows and groovy moves. Initial target: add a dancer every Friday until I run out of space. Secondary target: may as well try and do it for a year now..." Easy listening music comes in and a series of 52 clouds drift by, some going left, some right. Each has a rainbow appearing and disappearing, and a single dancer doing their unique and occasionally inexplicable moves. Each cloud has a number, showing which week they were the dancer for. At the end the copy reads "Have a good weekend if you possibly can" with the word good also surrounded by the words sparkly, wonderful, funky, joyful, splendid and relaxing.

I like immigration. I like not to have serious skills gaps in our services. I like mixing with people who grew up in other countries. I like being enriched by other cultures. I would like the feeling that my country opened its arms to people fleeing terrible situations elsewhere. I don’t understand why other people don’t think like this

News Agents podcast has an interview from today with a man who started out saying I'm not racist but... (yeah right) and specified Jews and Muslims as the immigrants he wants rid of.

Jews are NOT trying to get into the UK in any significant numbers.
2021/22 Census has 277,613 Jews in the UK, 0.4% of the population.
277,613 Jews and the racists are naming us as people to get rid of. We are a TINY minority.

5,847 (0.1%) in Scotland, 2,044 (0.07%) Wales, 439 (0.02%) NI

If you'll be watching some of , what's caught your eye from their offerings? Have you picked one to see first?

I'm going to start with The Lines That Define Me (because I've been waiting for more Japanese coming of age films since the last festival) for morning-ish and maybe The Broken Mariko for afternoon-ish as that will be heavy I think so better to watch early in my binge.

With the world focusing intensely on Gaza, many likely do not know that Hezbollah rocket attacks sparked massive fires in northern Israel. Nearly 1,000 acres burned. Most of the region has been evacuated since Oct. 7th, so there are no known deaths due to the blazes, though many have been admitted to the hospital to treat smoke inhalation.

Interesting.
“He trained his men for their top-secret commando operations by getting them to climb the walls of Harlech’s medieval castle and break in undetected.
If they succeeded in that part of the mission, they had to immediately run the 38 miles to the top of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and back.”

Sometimes it's difficult, when writing up population survey results, not to presume that people are logical and/or consistent.

'If people think [x], then it follows that...'. No. It really doesn't.

People (both collectively and individually) are perfectly capable of believing mutually incompatible things at once.

But it really makes it difficult to write about...

Festival Online 2024 will be Weds 5th-19th June (starts & ends noon JST so effectively the 18th for UK).
It's a great opportunity to see Japanese films which can be hard to find.
I'm going to watch as many as I can and post brief thoughts under with the aim of helping those with busy lives choose one or two. Happy to have conversations as well.
Please follow the hashtag if you're interested.

Calling to protest outside Hillel and demand it be removed from campus is antisemitic as fuck. What the fuck is wrong with people

18+ gavi,

This is in direct reference to this. If you are targeting the only Jewish life organization on campus you have a clear seething hatred of Jews.

Look at the red cross hair emoji they added to the Hillel logo. That is fucking sick shit. That’s what hamas uses in its propaganda online. What the fuck?!?!?

If there is one thing I’ve learned (and that’s being generous) from caring for my brother it’s that the line between disabled and abled (physically, intellectually, developmentally, etc.) is much more porous, unfixed, and ephemeral than we want to admit; attempting to rigidly categorize and classify ourselves and others ‘once and for all’ is at best futile.

Now that the last chicken has reached its new home, I can share this, which is all the chickens I've made. When I started my first chicken 3 months ago, I didn't realise I was going to make 6 in a very short time. Thank you all for humouring my obsession these past few months. I'm going to take a break now, but maybe I'll make another one if there's someone who really needs one.

I am seeing a lot of hubbub over a third case of #birdflu in a human in the US.

Just to be clear: Right now, in our "lowest" point of #COVID19 in almost a year, 278 Americans are being infected EVERY MINUTE. Ten percent or more will go on to suffer months or years of Long COVID symptoms. Some will have damaged brains, hearts, and other organs.

We shouldn't lose focus on the immediate and real risks we face of COVID.

if you can't be in a coalition with people you disagree with on at least a few things, you can't build a coalition big enough to accomplish anything in the United States or defeat rising fascism.

It’s just not going to work.

Everyone elevates Revolution over evolution.

But few revolutions stand the test of time like evolution. Grasping the power of evolving, understanding change takes time is fundamentally a sound strategy for getting where you need to go. Incremental progress holds better than upsetting the entire thing over a potentially imperfect outcome.

Critical thinking demands patience and perseverance both. I wish people employed it more. But drama sells.

Consuming news has ceased to be something that can be done passively in order to be informed of the goings-on in the world. You have to watch your emotions closely. What phrase made me feel that way? What about it triggered that emotion? What other phrases were used to a similar - or different - effect? Who benefits from me feeling this way? Stripped of those particular words, what other ways can the events be described in?

Welcome to 2024, where news is a full contact martial art.

@jens An understanding of historical theory helps - or, at least, that part of historical theory that says "all writers are biased - which bias does this particular writer have? And how does that affect what they've written?"
