Consuming news has ceased to be something that can be done passively in order to be informed of the goings-on in the world. You have to watch your emotions closely. What phrase made me feel that way? What about it triggered that emotion? What other phrases were used to a similar - or different - effect? Who benefits from me feeling this way? Stripped of those particular words, what other ways can the events be described in?

Why am I doing this?

In Italian, I need to polish my grammar. When I speak, I forget verb forms and so forth. My understanding is pretty solid by now.

Romanian is my inlaw's language. I understand enough for getting by, but I have little sense of the grammar yet.

Japanese I studied a long time ago, and regret forgetting.

Castellan I needed this summer, and is close enough to Italian that I really have no excuse for not speaking when I understand most.

Swahili? Random African choice.

@jens Blimey. I'm just learning German (because my family background is German). I'm planning on Latin after I (eventually) finish with German. Does being multilingual give you a head start for learning more languages?

@jens I hear you about the grammar!

I use the Streak feature to keep going - I'd hate to lose it!

And yes - having heard German as a child from my mother, I've learned from her that other people she's tried to teach (who didn't get the multilingual boost) have a dreadful time distinguishing between the sounds. Maybe that's why I started with German.

@jens I love the compound words! After 12 months, we're just getting into them on Duolingo - but I'll never forget that my grandmother could describe a man as being "so muscular he can barely walk" in a single word. (I can't remember the word, though - I'll get it one day!)

Duolingo isn't making German grammar particularly easy, to be honest. It keeps putting the exceptions to the rules in as we go along. It gives me some sympathy for people learning English - one spelling rule for English that we learn as children is "i before e except after c." Except that you can construct whole paragraphs using the exceptions to that rule. (Somebody once told me that English doesn't just borrow words, it pursues other languages down blind alleys, mugs them, and rifles their pockets for spare vocabulary.)

For those who need to know:

ACT Wildlife is replacing soon-to-be-illegal fruit nets with the legal ones. Take them your old ones and they will replace them.

They have also Failed Their Advertising. The only reason I know about this is that my sister and mother dragged me out there with their carload of old nets a couple of weekends ago.
