Really enjoying https://draculadaily.com. I tried last year but missed a few entries, got confused about the story and dropped it. Fun way to read the book but important to make sure you don't skip bits. To make it easier I have a filter move the emails into a folder.

As I enter my first summer of ownership I now know what the flat panel on the front in place of a grill is called.

It's the Fly Catcher ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Overheard quite an elderly couple debating #AI in a beautiful spot in the #PentlandHills near #Edinburgh. He was all in on the successor species nonsense and she could see right through it. They walked off still talking about it.

245 miles today, the most driving I've done in a day. Plenty for me, if not a lot by some folks' standard. One 20 minute charge. Easy peasy.

Looking at the state of the software industry, I expect to be forcibly brought back from retirement in some 15-20 years from now, if I will even be allowed to retire.

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@deshipu Scary thought, I hope to retire by the end of the decade. What will we be needed to do?

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@deshipu Is this because when we retire there will only be a useless generation of LLM-assisted script kiddies?

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@deshipu Ah, yes that's true. I was being overly cynical. Maybe we have a responsibility to pass on what we know before retiring?

Which one would you choose?

  1. Make sure you correctly handle user input in SQL queries to prevent SQL injection, or

  2. Make a standard banning any punctuation in geographical places and force local authorities to rename streets and reissue all street signs.

Neal Ascherson - always worth a read, be you independence or union-minded.

"Polls saying the nationalist cause is no priority among voters are misleading. The aspiration to once again be a sovereign European state has only been strengthened by devolution."

The communication between my #EV and its charger is a bit flaky when the solar charging is intermittent, and sometimes it won't start a charge despite plenty solar power. Poking the car into charge-always mode via the app seems to fix it so I added that to my automation.

Now I'm getting "your charge has been interrupted" notifications on my phone several times an hour despite no charge actually starting.

Other than turning notifications off I don't have a good fix for this ๐Ÿค”

Excellent performance from our the last couple of days. Has powered most of our household usage, and despite a couple of short trips the has gone from 60 to 88% charge. Exported a few kWh too.

DATEDIF(A2, B2, "D") to get the number of days between two dates.

Really? This is the state of spreadsheet software in 2024?

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

I'm only using a spreadsheet to try to make sense of my #OctopusEnergy bills. I have been billed 20 times since August covering a different duration each time, between 3 and 111 days long ๐Ÿคฌ

It looks like they think I exported ยฃ410 of solar energy between December and March, which is hilarious enough but they then CHARGED me that amount.

So the spreadsheet is just antiquated bollocks. Octopus are incompetent.

Discovered the drop-off charge at Edinburgh Airport is half price for . Not complaining as the charge is a ridiculous money-grab but it's pretty hilarious greenwashing.

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@GBJames the drop-off charge is ยฃ5 if you're driving into the airport even for a minute to drop someone off. It's ยฃ2.50 for EVs.

Yet another incorrect electricity bill from #OctopusEnergy. This time they have billed me twice for three whole months, which makes a grand total of zero correct bills since I joined last year. Truly awful.

TFW when you discover that your car has an API... :cyber_hacking:

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@m Cool, isn't it? I've been using mine (https://github.com/hacf-fr/renault-api in my case) to build smarter EV charging so that I get a base charge of 60% from cheap overnight grid power then allow my solar panels to top it up as much as possible during the day. An Alexa skill on top of that lets me ask the current charge level and override the nighttime charge limit if I'm doing a longer journey next day.

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@m Access to the car API is all from a machine running in my house, using AWS IoT Data to communicate with the lambdas that Alexa invokes. Mostly low enough usage that it's all free but I did get billed 1p the other month ๐Ÿ˜‚

neilgall,
@neilgall@mastodon.scot avatar

@m Oh, I can also start the heating with an Alexa command. Brilliant in an EV where the car heats up in 2-3 minutes using power from the house.

I booked an to use on holiday in Spain. Not for environmental reasons - that would be pretty hollow since we're flying there - but because it was the cheapest option for a reasonable sized car. I doubt we'll be doing many mile..., er kilometers but anyone know how public charging in Catalonia compares to the UK?

@russellt Cheers. Do you tend to need a provider-specific card or does contactless payment work?
