Ok I thought I switched off my work computer before Christmas but I just checked it and some app prevented shutdown. Surely that problem could have been solved by 2024? (e.g. APIs should exist for well behaved apps to save and restore their state, and we could make the OS tell poorly behaved apps to eff off)

interesting game using magnets

two players alternate placing magnetic balls on a board with eleven rows with 10 dimples for the balls to be placed in. if balls are placed too close, they stick to each other and other balls nearby and player picks up the connected balls. person with no more balls in their hand wins.

Last night I relearned one of my own metal #guitar solos recorded in 1993 when I was 22. I played pretty fast but was never like your modern shredders (still don't really like that style, tbh). Hard to capture the raw energy of it but feels natural to drop a few notes and play with a bit more expression now. It's a metal solo with reading glasses on.

A lot of my old thought processes came back though. Seems to mostly be in a locrian mode with some nice little arpeggios mirroring the chord sequence, etc. Tasty wee semitone bends. As I say I was never a scale shredder.

If I get good enough at it I'll record it and present the 30 years apart versions side by side.

Anyway I'll try to relearn more of my old stuff since I have a few more recordings. Except there's one I know was a deliberate cacophony of noise. Maybe that's best left in my 20s.

In a language like JavaScript, if you ever find yourself thinking about which object-oriented design pattern to use, just check if you can use a higher-order function instead.

Function-passing obviates the need for most object-oriented design patterns if your programming language is functional enough.

Preheating #ElectricCar with heat pump from the house electricity on a cold day. Was completely frozen, but ready to drive in 5 minutes.
