We're the best!!! Grammar Girl just made the Writer's Digest list of 101 Best Websites for Writers! 🎉🎉🎉

We've been on the list before for the website, but this year is special because it's the first time we're on the list for the PODCAST. (Yes, the list of websites has a category for podcasts and YouTube channels.)

It means so much to me to know that people love and appreciate the show. Thank you to Writer's Digest and to all the people who listen! 1/2

@grammargirl Congratulations, Mignon! But I am surprised your netcast hasn't been on the list for years.

@ambivalena Morning, but I'll pass on the dip. I imagine that water is very cold!

@jds @hikingdude I somewhat understand. I never scrambled over an icy snowfield to bag a peak at dawn, but I have done plenty of night hiking to capture nice morning light for a photo or night hiked several miles back to camp after an evening photoshoot. Being a night owl anyway, I rather enjoy hiking at night. But it would be amazing to see the sunrise from the top of Whitney, wow!

Now I simply need to finish the work in hand to be able to close off that part of my life.

@snaptophobic Good luck to you. I've looked at your website and it appears you do spectacular work! Wish I could see it in person.

Since it will be well over a week before the replacement axle for my car arrives, I decided I should get my converted 1976 KZ400 running again. Very long story. In the mid-2000s I ran it with Pb acid batteries. Then I put NiCd batteries on it but never finished that traction pack change over. Then I got Li batteries, did a lot of work on it but stopped with only the low voltage wiring to complete. So, after literally decades, time to get the old bike running again since my car is in limp mode.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@bosquebill Lol -- indeed!

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena As an electric it's really fast and fun. But with the old lead acid batteries you couldn't go very far, about 32km. With the lithium, at half the weight, I expect to get 80km or more!

Under creative construction here. I got 20 bollards going and have to decide how to use them. Likely to make simple square bases to keep them from tipping when the dog comes by. These first solar lights were charged up and I had to get a photo of the shadow play. There are 4 heavy wall mount lanterns but I think too heavy to mount easily on stucco.

So this is the place in Doyle, Calif, that I first stopped to photograph the aurora. I could easily see the vertical column structures while driving down the highway! I didn't stay long because some residents turned on a bunch of lights & came out with barking dogs &c. I moved to a spot further away. Wish I could have stayed because the railroad people were assembling the train & I may have captured some interesting lights of moving trains.

I decided to roll the dice, that my CV joint on my car wouldn't blowup, for a run up north out of city lights to see the aurora--& I'm so glad I did! Two shots from northern California: First is from Doyle & the second is from Frenchman Lake. What an amazing display! For a time the aurora covered a 180 degrees from east to west & was overhead & could be seen in the south! I shot these photos with a 15mm f/2.0 30sec ISO400.

Color photo of an aurora. The landscape is forested mountains with a tongue of a lake going from the lower left to lower central frame. A distant body of water can be seen past the tongue. In the sky there are stars. On the horizon, just above the low mountain ridge line, is a band of yellow-green. Blue is above that. Then red. Then purple. There are numerous vertical streaks as well.

Stayed out far past my bedtime and got some truly beautiful pictures of a sky I have never seen before.

To my eyes, this was just a streaky blue with the faintest trace of pink. But the streaks were crystal clear!

Seen in Northern Nevada at the N39 latitude.

A pink and pale green sky with vertical streaks of brighter pink and white and reflecting in a rippled lake. Dark clumps of reeds dot the glowing water.

@ambivalena Ya, the sea is very special & I miss visiting it several times per year. Lakes are great though, & I'd bet lakes in Sweden are spectacular! We have an interesting mix here in Northern Nevada. 20-30 minutes away is alpine Lake Tahoe & we have several remnant ice age endorheic lakes, Pyramid & Mono Lakes being the most notable. The one of Emerald Bay with comet NEOWISE has an interesting feature in the back of the bay called Vikingsholm. Here's a story about it: http://vikingsholm.com/

Comet NEOWISE reflected in Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe. The bay is in the foreground with a small island in the middle. There's a narrow opening into a large lake. So it looks like an hourglass between the bay and the main lake. The mirror like bay is surrounded by hillsides thickly covered with conifer trees. It's predawn and there's a light yellow glow on the horizon and faint stars dot a light blue sky. In the sky at about center frame, above the distant mountain range on the opposite of the lake, is a comet that appears as a vertical white streak. A shape point is at the bottom and a tail fans out above the dot.
A color photo of a desert lake with three pyramid shaped rocks. The foreground is flat and dry with very low plant growth. A turquoise blue lake is visible at middle ground where two of the pyramids are on the left and one, with its top missing, is on the right. On the opposite side of the lake are very tall mountains with a hint of snow on top. The tops are shrouded in clouds.
A black and white photo of tufa towers in a lake. The tufa towers are vertical and very rough looking. Probably about seven meters tall. They are reflected in mirror like water in the foreground. The shadow of other tufa towers is cast on the visible towers by a rising sun. In the background are tall snow capped mountains.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena Ya, the comet was really fun to see and photograph --thanks. And ya, quiet secret lakes and ponds in the forest are really cool. There's so much life in and around them.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena Oh ya. I'm a sky watcher. Use to be an amateur astronomer but I no longer have a telescope. Yes, I planned that shot carefully. Made others of the comet in two other places. Not at my computer so can't post them. Did you see the comet in 2020?

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena Oh, too bad, NEOWISE was a really great comet. It was as good as Hale-Bopp (1995) or Hyakutake (1996). Did you see those? I'd guess if you looked there's probably a Swedish astronomy club that puts out a newsletter. Dr. Becky at Oxford has a Night Sky News each month on YouTube. Sky & Telescope is a good source. Their short monthly podcast reviews what to watch for each month. They also have a weekly article summarizing what to look for. Here's the podcast: https://skyandtelescope.org/observing/astronomy-podcasts/

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!
