I am blind. Because of course I have to mention it in my profile. Accessibility drives me. I use all the major operating systems in some way, and find great things about all of them. I also enjoy reading, eating, relaxing, eating more, and chatting. I want to be a cat when I grow up.

My opinions are my own, and definitely do not reflect those of my employer.

    @devinprater Not offending at all.

I must say that, being a keyboard-first user, most of Windows + Microsoft apps do a good job, once one wraps one's head around shortcuts.

But yes, I've tested so many apps with a screen reader that I can only concur.

As I've become prone to say lately, accessibility is often added to the seventh sprint of any agile process that goes through cycles of six sprints.

So, it's December again, so I'm gonna pull out a little something I wrote last year. It's the Twelve Days of Christmas... but with #RetroTech! This is: the Twelve Days of Techmas! https://www.seedy.gq/writing/Twelve_Days_of_Techmas.txt

Wow, complaining about ableism on here really brings out… more ableism. I’ve just been treated to “people are over sensitive these days” and “I can’t be ableist because I grew up with disabled kids”. Absolute peak

Bearing in mind that even I consider it a tedious piece of writing, I did some time ago write up "My Coding History" as two blog posts.
Nonetheless, it was interesting to research the details versus my memories and is, perhaps, a bit of a time capsule.

Me: I wonder if there is a way to mount a zip file as a drive using FUSE.

    Me: I should ask Mastodon.

Me: Wait, no, I should just look on Google.

[After two minutes of Google searching]

Me: I need to ask Mastodon which of the three separate modules for mounting a zip file as a drive using FUSE is the one I should actually use

Okay so... Am I the only one who hardly ever uses music streaming services? I just download all of the music I like and store it locally with multiple backups. Avoiding ads, having access to all of it offline and on whatever device I want it on, it just works. Unlike most everything nowadays

    D&D Character Idea:
You are a spy. You’ve been tasked by your agency to form an expert adventuring party, and win fame, all to gain entrance to an exclusive event for nobles. There, you are expected to make contact with an extremely reclusive noble to try and learn their sinister plans. Your adventuring party was formed out of convenience, but you can’t help growing fond of them over your adventures. #dnd #characterIdea #ttrpg

A few days after Alice’s birth, I put up the Christmas tree. My son was two, so it was the first Christmas tree he’d really been aware of. He pointed at it and opened his eyes and mouth very wide and said, “Is this my Christmas tree? Are you make it for me?” He was so impressed. He was showered with gifts by doting relatives but really would’ve been more than content with the contents of his stocking. I still do a stocking for Alice, but Max said I didn’t need to do it any more when he was about 16. Shopping for and assembling stockings is my favourite part of Christmas, when my stepdaughters spend the festive season with us I do stockings for them too, even though they’re in their 30s. This year we’re not seeing them until mid January though so it would be a bit OTT.

For anyone who is interested or who feels that someone would benefit from this, here is a link to an accessible advent calendar for blind users. Be good now and don’t open all the days at once. Day 2 so far is my favourite but then you never know what’s coming next. #christmas #accessibility 🎅 🎄 https://games.tactiletimes.org/advent.html

Make sure alt text conveys an image's intended message. Imagine a weather forecast. Helpful alt text might say, "Forecast showing temperatures in the high 20s on Sunday and Monday before jumping to 40 on Tuesday." This is much more informative than "Picture of weather forecast."

I was reminiscing with friends about phone memories and my first actual smart phone, the Sony Xperia Pro which had an amazing keyboard, which then led the conversation to how no-one is making iPhone keyboard cases anymore, which seemed to have stopped around the iPhone 6. Doing some Googling and it turns out in 2015 Blackberry settled with one company making such a case on patent infringement, around the time they were about to release an iPhone 6 model and that’s mysteriously when everyone else seemed to have stopped. I wonder if these patents are still the reason no one has tried since, wonder who owns the rights to them in the first place since the brand is basically dead. Is it TCL still? If so I wonder if they would still go after people. I’d still love if such a product were released.

Halfway considering doing streams/videos where I go through 2023 with a to illustrate what challenges exist and how we our way around them. Honestly not sure if literally anyone would be interested in seeing that though

    zersiax,

Ok, the halfway became a whole way, and I have now started this project: The 2023 showcase: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoI1JGnSzOVKWI2fOpymnWcQtgxPLoW4X

Basically, the idea is that I go through the tasks with a , make sure the content is for as many viewers as I can. That means I narrate what I'm doing, the screen reader is audible when required, and the screen reader output is also visible on the screen.
Subtitles and transcriptions may not be up yet by the time this goes live, as it takes a minute for the autocaptioning to catch up. If it turns out these are really, really bad, which is possible, I will transcribe the videos myself using Whisper and make sure they get added to the videos.
My aim with these videos is to show off the accessibility issues that exist, point out easy fixes to them, give people who are curious about this field an introduction they can actually consume in a way that works for them, as well as just create awareness that we're here, we're not leaving, and we'd like to be part of the conversation is pursued.
Any feedback is, of course, more than welcome, and I wil incorporate it in videos going forward.
