Orgs, your blog post is fucking useless if you don't tell me WHEN it was published. Did that happen yesterday or 5 years ago? Fuck if I know, you didn't timestamp your posts.

I’m looking for assistive technologies (software or hardware) that could help someone with limited hand mobility control their computer and/or phone. One of their biggest difficulties at the moment is typing for long periods of time. Bonus points if it’s free and open source, but I’d like to offer them as many options as possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

anna,

@lffontenelle That’s really helpful! Thank you.

anna,

The price difference to go from an 83 inch OLED to an 88 inch is just bonkers

anna,

@christianselig One of them is an 8K TV, though. That's definitely inflating the price.

I always struggle to watch movies referenced in pop culture ad nauseum, but The Terminator is really good.

I’ve been using Obsidian daily for about 3 months, and I cannot overstate how useful it is to have that discipline to write down not only your thoughts, but decisions you’ve taken, tasks you’ve completed, things you’ve discussed and witnessed.

My brain is excellent at finding patterns and connecting the dots, but terrible at storing fine details at the scale my life practically requires me to. So I let my “first” brain do what’s great for and my “second” brain does the rest—it always remembers.

anna,

Note: I'm using Obsidian, but that principle applies to any note-taking app or tool, really. Don't make it about the tool itself, make it about the information you're collecting and storing.

A note on doctor’s notes: I am blind since birth. When I was trying to transfer from a university with no accessibility center to another that had one, I needed a doctor’s note with updated eye test results to prove I’m disabled to the commission of the test I was about to take. I needed that to validate my accommodations request.

The ophthalmologist I saw since I was a child — who wrote multiple papers about my conditions — couldn’t be bothered to fill out the necessary paperwork.

anna,

@mattcen It is, it convinced me he didn’t see me as a person, but as an experiment.

anna,

@mattcen Not that I think that a medical exemption is a good thing in that case (it isn’t, people should be free to protect themselves as much as they can since society has decided protecting others isn’t a collective responsibility), but trying to get a doctor’s note even when you are in the medical system being examined and monitored by specialists since birth definitely isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. 😬

It always baffles me when people act like every single person can jump from an OS to another on a whim, as if there weren’t very good reasons why they’re using their OS of choice in the first place.

So today I just found out the MTA (transportation authority for NYC, which published open data about trains, metro and bus operations) geoblocks several countries from its developer portal - including Brazil.

Why?

@melissawm Portland does that too.

There’s a long-standing bug in Fedora (also in Fedora 40), where the sign-in screen is displayed at the wrong resolution (it doesn’t use the settings you have set in the Settings app).

So, for example, if you have 4K@2x set in your settings for your monitor, the sign-in screen will still display at a tiny 4K@1x.

To fix, download an app called GDM Settings from the Software app and press Display → Apply current display settings → Apply.

anna,

@aral The last time I did some digging about it (4 years ago), it was because your user settings are stored on ~/.config/monitors.xml whereas GDM uses settings on /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml. Here’s an entry on the Arch Linux wiki about it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Setup_default_monitor_settings
