The meat is wrapped in plastic, the cheese is wrapped in plastic, the veggies are in little plastic baggies, the juice is in plastic jugs, the fruit is in plastic cartons... all of it gets thrown away but we banned the plastic shopping bags?

I was born in the 80's. I have a plastic shopping bag stuffed with every plastic shopping bag I've acquired for the last 40 years. It was the only plastic from a grocery trip that WAS actually being reused.

Don't even get me started on the paper straws.

I have literally moved my giant-target-store-plastic-bag-full-of-grocery-bags through 5 different places I've lived.

It may be the longest-lived physical object I've ever owned right alongside my plastic-tote-full-of-wires-and-connectors-going-so-far-back-that-there-are-VGA-cables and my cardboard-box-full-of-original-boxes-for-phones-and-accessories-I-don't-even-have-anymore.

I've built up a PCB to support four GY-PCM5102 DACs with a Raspberry Pi 5 and MiniDexed to give 8-channel audio output.

Includes: 4xDACs, SSD1306 display, encoder, buttons, MIDI IN/OUT.

Audiogram with the Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 logo, title "Episode 33: Much Ado About 'AI' 'Deception'" and subtitle "Why the handwringing over duplicitous algorithmis says more about us" Captions: MARGARET MITCHELL: It’s not fundamentally truthful. It’s literally a bullshit generator. This concept that somehow it’s already grounded in lying and truth and understands this as ‘a human good’ misunderstands how these systems work. EMILY M. BENDER: Yeah. IrateLump says in the chat, “It’s so hard to know how much of this is intentional misrepresentation and how much is just wishful thinking leading to motivated reasoning. MARGARET MITCHELL: I think that is so spot on. Yeah. Some of this is confirmation bias and some of this is experimenter’s bias. There’s kind of this fantasy, this kind of desire for this kind of thing to be true, even if it’s horrible. There’s this sci-fi part of us that gets really sort of stimulated and seduced into this mode of thinking. We’ll tend to see evidence of that even when there are other alternative reasonable explanations. We’ll tend to focus on that in particular when putting forward the results. And that’s how we end up in this sort of situation here, where it’s like seduction into fantasizing that has overwhelmed the more sort of rational explanations of what’s happening.

🆕 blog! “Infrared Infrastructure”

I recently went to EMF Camp (which is Glastonbury for geeks - lots of random electronics, talks, art, and camping). Naturally, I took along my Infrared camera and pointed it at interesting things! First up… sewage! Festivals often have big tanks to take away human effluence. But how can you, a normal human, tell how […]

I gave my Super 8 digital talk at #emf2024 and encountered quite a group of like minded old camera enthusiasts.

The idea formed in the Q&A after the talk that a camera hacking village would be a cool idea at a future EMF. I'm unable to organise it because other commitments, but I am putting it out here.

At a guess, a workshop area and a darkroom (subject to water supply). Make it sew.

I had the lovely opportunity to talk about my generative art projects at ! Embracing the variety in each and every project is very important to me. That's why producing a new series (for example for my Patreons) can become quite the challenge really quick! So, how do create 50 unique t-shirts when screen printing is not an option? Check out my talk!

Loving my "Bender Hat" modules, I've added about 40 ohm resistance using resistors found at to tone down the ridiculous LED noodles, and have added a rainbow hat to one that Kat found forlornly snapped off and lying on the ground — it now has new life!

The guy who made the Bender hat kits left nothing I can identify him with on the PCBs alas ‐ but he was doing vinyl and laser stuff at the RGB tents.

Some glowy led stuff.

The arcade was great, filled mostly with modern games and game-like installations! Tesla coil music every night! <3 There was a lovingly-made on-site riddle game (about the murder of Clippy!), and at least two location-based games!

An honestly amazing program of talks, no wonder they rejected mine. :P Interestingly, there were multiple talks by popular British comedians/science educators, who were probably invited to speak. #emfcamp #emf2024
