Using AI to turn body-camera videos into police reports is worrisome given that some AI have been shown to "hallucinate" facts, or summarize events inaccurately, EFF’s Matthew Guariglia told Phoenix’s 12News. https://www.12news.com/article/tech/artificial-intelligence-police-reports/75-bab7ec96-5521-40fd-a716-6f4ea908f815

@eff all AI hallucinate. It's literally what they're designed to do.

nix is melting ❄️😰

afaict the community has been invaded by trolls and now the maintainers are quitting.

let's talk hypotheticals. let's say that you had a few million dollars to invest in creating a package manager that could "fix Nix".

what would that look like?

ashguy,
@ashguy@hachyderm.io avatar

@timClicks quick everyone. Tim has a few million dollars lying around.

"If you're under 25 your brain isn't fully developed, so you can't be trusted to make informed decisions"

I'm seeing this a LOT lately, especially today with the Cass Review fallout. And it's utter guff, based on hearsay, misunderstandings of neuroscience, or wilful ignorance.

Why? I'll tell you why

@Garwboy gotcha. It's actually kind of rude that they don't supply at least mattresses at the 100m mark for when the runners collapse.

@elmowilk been following you on this for a while now. Any plans on a native Mac build? (No skin in the game either way, was just surprised at no Mac spec sheet given... Bevy 😂)

Time for another reminder that I am a real human/not AI.

I recently tried bouldering with some friends out in Austin. Am I a giant, do I have miniature friends, or is the camera angle simply playing tricks on us? The world may never know.

(International) payments are the strangest phenomenon. Everything's electronic, yet everything seems to take a week.

ashguy,
@ashguy@hachyderm.io avatar

@timClicks it's actually not at all straightforward to do from a banking perspective.

End of the day utility grade international transactions (ie I can guarantee this cash has landed in an institution in a foreign country with different laws and requirements, at the rate that I quoted at the start of the transaction and at institutional levels of capital movement) requires insane trust, nation spanning platforms and legal frameworks and the integration of hyper-competitive organisations.

This is so cool! The engineers at MIT discovered that cement and carbon black (paracrystalline carbon) can be mixed to create a supercapacitor that still behaves like cement. That means you can build cement structures that store energy. They estimate that 45 m³ of this material is enough to store 10 kWh (about a day’s worth of energy for a home).

“New Breakthrough in Energy Storage – MIT Engineers Create Supercapacitor out of Ancient Materials”

ashguy,
@ashguy@hachyderm.io avatar

@saddestrobots nope. Educate and support parents so they're better able to raise their kids but the minute you suggest that I surrender my right to educate and protect my kids to, say, Florida you've lost me.

Hmm... it looks like my pricing for my live course is too low.

Turtle Sec's (In)Secure C++ course is USD 2k, and so is the intro to Rust course by Ferrous Systems.

Comprehensive Rust is a similar length, but half the price.

ashguy,

@timClicks @fluke keep doubling it until someone else thinks that you're ripping them off. Then double it one more time for good luck.

ashguy,
@ashguy@hachyderm.io avatar

@timClicks @fluke I suppose more seriously consider whether they're doing anything you're not, and if you're pretty much efforting at a similar rate don't charge any less than them because they have dialed in that price based on experience and factoring in a lot of cruft you haven't even thought of. I would go so far as to say pitch yourself a bit above what they're doing because you want to build in that buffer to give you additional room to adjust and dial in what you're doing.
