Ok, so this Python code:

" ".join([x for x in data])

is faster than:

" ".join(x for x in data)

The former uses technically redundant list comprehension, but looking at the byte code, there is less of it than when using the generator notation directly.

I tested with up to 2.2 GB of text, and the latter is consistently 16-18% slower than the former.

They both use the same amount of memory, so clearly there is no reason for the second except for cleaner notation.

If you find yourself overheating in August, then you should come to New Zealand next year for Forge Rust. https://forgerust.com

If you come a day early, I will take you to where Rivendell was filmed and we can go through a walk through the forest there (it's as nice as it sounds)

@system76 Hey team, if you ever wanted to do booth duty at a Rust event in New Zealand, boy do I have a deal for you

Given the trend from who has expressed interest at giving a talk at Forge Rust so far, it looks like the biggest risk is creating a "white guy party". I have work to do to create a welcoming atmosphere.

Over 100 people have expressed interest in attending Forge Rust in New Zealand next year!! So I guess this is happening.

Spammers seem to have found the expression of interest form for Forge Rust 2025, so the conference has got that going for it

Doing some initial thinking about mini events at the side the Forge Rust conference.

Do any Wellington venues work well with childcare?

Are there any tour companies that you can recommend for hosting a partners/family programme?

Can anyone who plays MTG tell me whether a space for games would be better arranged as a formal tournament or just some tables and a whiteboard that allows players to self-organise?

After a few weeks of feeling surprisingly negative about myself, I think that I am starting to regain a bit of spark.

Training sessions this week have been going really well.

I'm looking to buy a tablet as a second monitor while travelling. Does anyone have recommendations for a tablet that supports MiraCast to Linux (or some other way)?

@digs Good luck with the programme. It sounds tricky. Hopefully the lure of food will keep them away from that fence.

Apple's just released the M4.

What are Intel and AMD doing?

I am somewhat grumpy that Apple seems to be the only people pushing CPUs forward at the moment.

A #rustlang tip: Parsing CLI arguments without 3rd party dependencies https://timclicks.dev/parse-cli-args-without-3rd-party-crates/

Sometimes, bringing in a third-party dependency, such as clap, to your project can feel like a bit of a burden.

For example, to improve your prospective users’ first impressions, you might want your examples to compile as quickly as possible.

That's admirable. But messages from crashing apps are not user friendly.

@tippfehlr Wow, a serious amount must be needed "Ethanol is less expensive but is harder to dose accurately, requires close monitoring of the serum ethanol concentration, and causes inebriation that may necessitate intensive care monitoring.".

Sorry about the self-promotion, but I think that this is one of the best videos I've produced. If you're learning Rust, I strongly recommend scheduling an hour on the weekend to watch it. https://youtu.be/J3C6sNK2wnk?si=5js8GOAOdfUmnhGs

@pdp Yes, I knew that this approach was flaky. I probably should have mentioned some of the facilities that tokio makes available, such as the JoinSet and the select! macro
