I just had a conversation with a guy who said, “Yeah, well I’m a capitalist.”

So I asked, “Okay, how much capital do you have?”

Boy, oh boy, does that question put things in perspective. He became a caricature of an old Warner Brothers cartoon character, trying to compose himself as he fumbled for words, all while he avoided actually answering the question.

So I simply repeated the question. I highly recommend.

Trump filed his reply in the immunity issue in the Supreme Court.

It's so bad it is embarrassing. It is exactly how not to write a legal document.

To review: The issue now is simply whether the Supreme Court will put the trial DC-J6 trial hold while it considers whether to grant cert (hear his appeal.)

Ordinarily the order is this:

💠 Person loses and files a writ for certiorari (which means asking SCOTUS to hear the appeal.
💠 SCOTUS decides whether to hear the case.

@Teri_Kanefield They are trying to act as if impeachment is a criminal prosecution in lieu of the courts.

To the best of my knowledge there is no standing theory that impeachment is a criminal proceeding.

It is purely political and is only about removing someone from office due to their conduct.

There are no criminal penalties or charges or anything.

Ridiculous.

HAHAHAHA!

Ken Buck announces he will resign from congress next week.

Buck had previously announced he would not run for re-election. Lauren Boebert announced she would run in Buck's district instead of her own.

https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/12/politics/ken-buck-leaving-congress-early/index.html

acwhite,
@acwhite@mastodon.social avatar

Colorado law requires the Governor now call a special election to fill Buck's seat. Whoever wins the special will have a leg up running as the incumbent in the fall. So... Boebert must either resign her seat to run in the special or run against an incumbent in the fall or switch again and run in her current district.

Buck's district is a safe republican seat. Boebert's is not. Buck screwed Boebert with this move.

It's the juxtaposition I think is a mistake. Both are incredibly important. While the monopolies exist they have the ability to own the politicians that and judges. That power must be broken if we ever hope to have anything close to free, fair, or equitable.

At the same time, yes, much of what happens in the government is play acting to distract the masses.

acwhite,
@acwhite@mastodon.social avatar

@rustoleumlove @StillIRise1963

Don't underplay anti-monopoly action regardless of whether it is big oil, big pharma, or "big ticket prices." This is front line action in the battle against corporate capitalism. We need anti-trust action like their was 120 years ago.

Nearing midnight and the end of the year. I’ve seen several people sharing their reading lists for the past year. I shared my summer time list back in September. You can find it somewhere back in my timeline.

Since then I have finished Propaganda by Eward Bernays mentioned at the end of that post. It was good and interesting but a bit dated (he wrote it in 1928) https://archive.org/details/BernaysPropaganda .

US House to vote on Motion to Vacate the Speaker Chair at roughly 1:30pm eastern. McCarthy has just entered and gaveled into session.

Expect enough Republicans to vote with a unified Democratic Caucus to oust McCarthy.

What happens after that is anyone's guess. McCarthy has offered Democrats no deals to try and gain their support.

@kcarruthers Yes, I was about to update my post with the following:

Let's be very clear that Nazism is inherently violent. A Nazi doesn't need to call for or promote violence explicitly. It is a violent and deadly ideology and to identify as a Nazi, explicitly, by symbolism, or by quotation and language appropriation is to declare your support for violence.
