[Sigh] Even if you get it at no additional cost with your Google One subscription, don’t use Google's VPN. Protecting your browsing from Google is one of the best reasons for using a VPN in the first place.
"The problem is that Google's VPN app changes the Windows DNS settings of all network adapters to always use Google's DNS, whether the VPN is on or off. Even if you change them, Google's program will change them back.”
Thursday, I updated my Mac to Sonoma 14.3.1. Tonight, I discovered my iTunes won't play any of my music except Bey's new album (purchased/downloaded Friday). In this moment, I'm actually ok with that. I'd still like to get to the bottom of what's going on, though.
How can Apple have a gazillion engineers & QA testers/evaporators, and still release buggy damn updates?!
"We will brick your device if you do not agree to terms of service" is not 🤬 consent.
"The company you worked for transfered your retirement to this company. You will not get access until you create an account and agree to our terms of service and fees and payments. There is no other way to reach us." Not 🤬 consent!
"The money you are owed is on this card. To redeem you have to sign this card which means you agree to our terms of service and fees." Not 🤬 consent!

Remember when Sony-BMG intentionally encoded malware on a music CD then distributed 22 million of them to the public? No Sony executives went to prison over this. But just you try it ...
A fun read on the history of the (proposed) fediverse logo.
"A lot of people think that the pentacle was chosen because of its occult or satanic connotations. And while it would be in Fediverse's rebellious spirit, this was not the case."
“Meta should be required to offer a no-tracking version of Instagram and Facebook completely free of charge. Meta could show ads to those users, but not the sort of ads that actually generate money.”
Don’t you do non-personalized ads at Daring Fireball? Do they really not generate money?
One thing that really sucks about the normalization of anarchist discourse through corporate social media is that anyone who's militant, earnest, or even just doxes nazis eventually gets banned, while those with the worst politics mind their Ps and Qs and become the last standing voices.
I know many Marxists here in Oregon, only two for certain are Leninists. I keep a list so that I can kill them during the revolution before they get a chance to set up their filthy secret police.
Hello and welcome to the first of what we hope will be a many episodes of our new series, This Day in Anarchist History!
In this series we’ll make brief primers on historical anarchist events, uprisings, bios of famous anarchists and beginnings of autonomous communities around the world and throughout time. It’s our hope that by understanding our past we can put our current social movements into broader perspective and fight for a better future.
In our premier episode we examine The Paris Commune, a short lived uprising when a broad coalition of the working classes took control of the city on March 18th 1871 and held out under siege until the end of May when the French national army entered Paris and executed thousands of rebels.
In the coming years, anarchists would seek vengeance for their comrades who fell at the Paris commune.
If you're from #Portland OR (high five), or have lived there awhile and know the city, I hope this will crack you up as much as it did me. It's from @joshjohnsoncomedy (that's his Instagram handle) and its about the, uh, vast quantity of #PDX bridges.
I work on the Portland bridges. This cracked me up!
(Also, thank god for Steven because — as a person with ME/CFS — Bridge Operator is one of the few I can do!)
@ahimsa_pdx
Not at all! Multnomah County owns 4 drawbridges (plus Sellwood and Sauvie Island): Hawthorne, Morrison, Burnside, Broadway.
Hawthorne is the head bridge. It is staffed 24/7. During the standard work day Monday-Friday, 7-3PM it is the only bridge with staff, because the maintenance folks from the Bridge department are all on the job and available to open any of the other Bridges. From 3PM, overnight an additional bridge is staffed. It is the operator’s choice which one to serve on.
According to the Austin for Palestine Coalition, more than 80 performers or panelists have dropped out of SXSW in solidarity with the Palestinian people under attack by the Israeli government. They backed out of the prestigious showcase after finding out the events are sponsored by Israeli military ally the US Army and arms suppliers RTX (formerly Ratheon), BAE systems and L3Harris.
According to this article in The Guardian, the boycott began with Ella Williams aka Squirrel Flower after she was made aware of SXSW’s connections by an Instagram post by the Austin for Palestine Coalition.
“RTX is known to supply weapons to the Israeli government; on an earnings call in late October last year, RTX’s [Raytheon] chairman and executive director, Greg Hayes, was quoted as saying shareholders would “see a benefit” from increased demand for weapons during the war in Gaza.”
Among those withdrawing from SXSW over its financial connections with the genocide in Gaza are all musical acts from Ireland. These include Belfast hip hop artists Kneecap, who posted their denunciation on Xitter:
After the announcing new repressions, reduction of retirement funds for all the population, layouts of hundreds from several institutions including, national airline company and disabilities agency, the autocrat #Milei just started closing press organizations and censoring journalists. The buildings are getting militarized.
