I always like the more ethnic world-music type entries in

For me that's what makes Eurovision Eurovision. It would be sad to hear 20 western pop songs with English vocals imho

What did I get done today?

I did some dishes
I did some laundry
I took all our old dvds and cds and organized them in a binder (sorry. Not keeping the cases).

That's better than nothing!

@lunarloony @Bogusmeatfactory I'm fighting the reply-guy urge here to tell you CDs and DVDs are digital too :P

This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

"monocoque" sounds dirty, but that's just because it's french

it actually refers to a boat or aircraft hull where loads are supported by the outer skin/shell

@brooke great band name actually lol

I'm deeply shocked to learn of the death of Steve Albini. I'm a huge fan of his work. I watched a YouTube video of him not even a week ago!

Aw man, this is such a bummer. I had secret delusional hopes of ever booking his studio and recording with him.

Man, this sucks.

Tijn,
@Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

This is Steve's last video on YouTube, explaining some obscure guitar amp he has. Still wearing a mask in 2024 like a boss.

Rest in peace, Steve ;(

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOf89-93cy0

Tijn,
@Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

Steve famously never accepted royalties, not even from Nirvana, because he didn't want to be complicit in the music industry's unethical money game. He viewed it as highly skewed against artists and wouldn't have anything to do with it.

Read his legendary article "The Problem with Music" from 1993 if you haven't already, which includes a breakdown at the end of who made how much from a popular record.

Tijn,
@Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

@jake4480 I don't know either, but I'm pretty sure payments to musicians haven't gone up exactly

Tijn,
@Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

@jake4480 My impression (as a complete outsider who knows nothing really) is that labels don't even invest in artists at all anymore.

Let them get a following by themselves on TikTok or whatever and only sign them when they've already shown to have a fanbase.

I'm pretty sure there's barely if any budget for session musicians either anymore. Just get a kid with a laptop make a track, right.

eniko, to random
@eniko@peoplemaking.games avatar

fuck it post deleted it's not worth the risk just to vent about the gatekeepers of success in gamedev

Tijn,
@Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

@eniko It seems very similar as far as I can tell to trying to make a career in music. Maybe any arts. It's incredibly difficult to carve out a space for yourself in order to make a living this way. A lot depends on being well-connected, somehow becoming an industry darling and even then still just sheer luck.

But even if it's hard, the regret of not giving it a serious try is also real. So all the power to anyone who does. Chances of it working out are slim, but if it does, it's magical.

    32 years ago today on May 5 1992, one of the greatest games of all time (and forever my favorite first person shooter), Wolfenstein 3D, was released. I wrote about it for the list of 20 video games I can't stop thinking about (https://spacetimetech.wordpress.com/2024/04/06/20-video-games-i-cant-stop-thinking-about). I still play it regularly. Sometimes weekly. Killing digital Nazis is always fun and therapeutic.

    You can play Wolfenstein 3D FREE in browser here: https://dosgames.com/game/wolfenstein-3d) and you can also download it free and run it on your own machine via DOSBox. Wolf 3D is also on Steam (https://store.steampowered.com/app/2270/Wolfenstein_3D) for a few bucks, and on the Microsoft store (the port of the 360 version). Now if they'd only port it to Switch! 😂

    Happy birthday, B.J. Blazkowicz. 🎂

    @jake4480 oh dude, we have a podcast on Wolf 3D coming up with @dosgameclub

    @jake4480 @dosgameclub awesome! I'll keep you in the loop regarding our schedule (you'll get a list of date / time options so we can work something out that works for everyone involved)

    We've got a guide on what's involved being a guest on the show here: https://www.dosgameclub.com/podcast-guide/

    but of course also feel free to just ask me anything

    Tijn,
    @Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

    @thomasfuchs I don't think I realised how new this tech was back in 2003 when I got my first laptop and connected to the college wifi

    Tijn,
    @Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

    @thomasfuchs yeah, pretty sure the network I was on back in 2003 was of the 11 mbps (802.11b) variety

    Tijn,
    @Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

    @brooke @thomasfuchs I had an iBook G3 at the time, which did have built-in wifi and also battery life was honestly not bad at all!

    This is all part of my "tech hasn't really improved that much in decades" hypothesis. Basically what I'm doing now, I have been doing for years, and very little has fundamentally changed since the early 2000s.

    Not for the first time I find myself browsing the internet for a cost effective thunderbolt 2 adapter for my old MacBook, and once again I’m amazed at how much that shit still costs.

    Also, how it’s almost impossible to find among the reams and reams of thunderbolt 3 /usb-c devices.

    Tijn,
    @Tijn@dosgame.club avatar

    @DJDarren I got a perfectly fine Thunderbolt (1? I think?) audio interface for use with my 2014 MacBook Pro, which I can't use now because new laptops don't have such a port and thus I can't connect it to anything current.

    I also looked at some converter boxes & cables, but the prices meant it made more sense to buy a new audio interface.

    Madness really.
