Americans wondering how on earth all the Taylor Swift fans got to last week’s concert at the Melbourne Cricket Ground when there’s no sea of car parking next to the stadium:

A fun coda to this is this recent video by @philip about when Melbourne built a giant Australian Rules football stadium without any public transport and the largest carpark in Australia, then got rid of it partly because of the legendary traffic jams it created: Waverley (neé VFL) Park

The DDR (East Germany) invented “unbreakable” drinking glasses for catering that were 5 times harder to break than Western glasses of equivalent thickness. The technology didn’t survive re-unification due to it being “uneconomical” - the “Superfest”glasses were more expensive to produce and because they broke less, you would sell fewer of them.

Whenever people from Sydney make jokes about Melbourne not having a train to the airport, I’m going to remind them of the time that a bunch of rich NIMBY pricks stopped the Eastern Suburbs Railway from getting extended 3000m to Bondi Beach “because it would let the Westies in”:

Bus reform in the Yarra Valley is finally being implemented, with big route changes and a new timetable for the 685 bus from Lilydale to Healesville (via Coldstream & Yarra Glen) starting from 26 November. This bus will have upgraded service frequencies on all days of the week and an extension to Healesville Sanctuary zoo, finally delivering usable public transport to the largest attraction in the Yarra Valley.

News of the Sydney “Tekno Train” being run during Vivid reminds me of when in 1976 the Victorian Railways converted a passenger excursion carriage into a “dance car” with a polished floor and a carpeted area for a band to play on, for use on charter trains throughout the state:

#askfediverse my daughter, 8yo, wants to try playing around making 2D animations in some kind of software, she's essentially talking about ragdoll animation I think (eg. Being able to move limbs and tween between them, rather than having to draw each frame from scratch on top of a transparency).

All my Googling for this just brings me to Unity or Blender, which seem like..overkill for this task for a kid. Does anyone have any other simpler suggestions?

This is a fantastic book: an official 1978 promotional guide book to the Hammersley Railway in the Pilbara. It’s got frankly autistic levels of detail about the operation and the production quality is :discoursechef:
Easily one of my favourite railway books now and I only bought it a few weeks ago on a whim

Page from inside the book discussing the exact size, operating parameters and train control for a typical train on the Hammersley Railway at the time. Check out that Extremely 1970s timber veneer control room!
Simplified track profile diagram of the Hammersely Railway mainline, including ruling grades and maximum curves for each section, major locations and water crossings

After almost 500 days, Victorian Goldfields Railway steam locomotive J549 has returned to Maldon! It has been undergoing a heavy overhaul at the VGR workshops in Castlemaine, and finally ventured out onto the VGR's mainline today as part of a series of load trials as part of its return back to service. Well done to all the people involved in getting it going again!

One of the mysteries of rap history is how the Beastie Boys managed to avoid any major diss battles, with anyone, despite being at best really annoying brats and at worst, historically huge misogynists and dickheads. These three should be studied by peace and conflict experts
